2020.09.16 22:03 BuckRowdy Dr. Ariel Sanjines paid an employee $10K to kill his ex-wife and her boyfriend in her Mountain Shadows home. She survived and the neighborhood later was nicknamed Murder Shadows.

Sometimes I think about how you're never going to hear about a successful murder-for-hire scheme. I'm not talking about cartel sicarios or the mafia, but genuine meet-in-a-smoky-bar-hand-a-stranger-cash-under-the-table schemes that spawn movie tropes. You only ever hear about the spectacular failures.
The greatest murder for hire story of all time in my opinion, is the Susan Kuhnhausen case. There is simply no other story on that same level. She fought off her attacker and killed him, offering to call 911 for him if he would just reveal who hired him.
There's lots of other stories of contract killings gone way wrong of course. Often the "hitman" is an undercover officer and a quick arrest is made. Other times the hired hitman is incompetent and the plan fails.
This is not a write up about a big case or an important case. It's just a story about a guy who got so mad at his wife he trusted two 18 year old employees, one of whom he was dating, with killing his wife and her boyfriend for $10,000.
Benjamin Franklin once famously said that "three can keep a secret if two are dead" and yet people who want to hire killers seem to want to involve a lot of people in the process. No one ever seems to think long term about how they're going to keep something like this a secret forever.
Dr. Ariel Sanjines and his brother immigrated to the US from Bolivia. The timeframe and his early history is not known. In 1991 he was 35 years old, the owner of a Perkins restaurant, living in an upscale suburban neighborhood with his wife in Chattanooga, TN. The neighborhood, Mountain Shadows, would, in a few years and a second murder, take on a dark new nickname: Murder Shadows.
Trouble arose in the marriage and his wife Gina Sanjines accused him of abuse. Then she filed for a restraining order and a divorce. She was given custody of their children and, as so often happens, a bitter custody dispute ensued. Dr. Sanjines would become more and more angry about this over time.
If you've ever worked in a restaurant you'll know that gossip is rampant and that there are very few secrets that stay secrets for long. And that's the scene of the crime that's the subject of this post: A $10,000 murder-for-hire fiasco set in an east Tennessee Perkins breakfast restaurant that had failure written all over it from the outset.
Another thing you'll note about restaurants is that it's common for managers or owners to creep on their female staff. Shortly after Amy Marcum started working at Perkins at the age of 17 in 1992 that's exactly what happened. Sanjines took an interest in her and after she turned 18 he charmed her and the two began dating around August of 1992. Dr. Sanjines was twice her age.
By December he had become possessive and abusive. At the time, his wife was paying a PI to follow him and he was becoming increasingly more upset at the alimony he was paying her. She was dating someone new and he was jealous. By early May of 1993 he was already talking openly about having her murdered to the point where he was being overheard by people in the restaurant.
Kristine Kennedy, a potential witness for the prosecution, overheard [Sanjines] say that he should hire someone to kill his wife. Additionally, a friend of [Sanjines] ... stated that he and [Sanjines] had discussed the idea of having their wives killed.
Research didn't really shed much light on the mental state of Dr. Sanjines at the time but it would appear he was unraveling pretty fast because at a birthday party he told Marcum:
someone at the party had Mafia connections in New York. This person could have Mrs. Sanjines killed. He then asked [Marcum] to kill Mrs. Sanjines.
Amy Marcum was 19 at the time.
Three months after that Jeremy Ingram, 18, approached Amy Marcum in the restaurant parking lot and said he had heard she was looking to have someone killed and that he knew someone who had done it before and could be hired to do it again. It's not clear if Ingram knew what he was talking about but Marcum agreed to connect him with Dr. Sanjines. She told police that she had also talked about this to another employee at the Perkins.
Dr. Sanjines continued to bring it up but by November of 1993, Marcum told Dr. Sanjines she wanted nothing to do with killing his wife and he told her if she told the police about it he would kill her. She continued to date him and even spent the night with him after he made the threat. She was in love with him.
Jeremy Ingram told police that he spent the next few months trying to find someone to carry out the hit. Ingram eventually got a call from Sanjines that it had to happen now and he decided to just do it himself.
Gina Sanjines, Dr. Sanjines's ex-wife had attended a function with her boyfriend, Virgil Schrag, 33 on the night of March 6th, and returned home late. They had been dating for a few months and the kids were with their father that night. I'm sure he thought this would provide him an unassailable alibi. Jeremy Ingram had entered the residence and moved some electronic equipment against the window to stage a robbery. Gina and Virgil were upstairs in the bedroom checking the answering machine. She heard a sound and Schrag went to check it out. As he exited the bedroom, Ingram shot Schrag once in the head causing him to immediately crumple to the floor.
He then shot Gina three times and fled the scene. Ms. Sanjines survived the attack.
Ingram drove an hour up the road to abandon the murder weapon, returned home, then set out for a ski trip with the money. When he returned he was arrested. After police compelled him to call Dr. Sanjines to discuss the murders, arrests of Dr. Sanjines and Amy Marcum were made that same day.
All three defendants pleaded guilty and there was no trial. Marcum took a plea deal and got a 10 year sentence. Ingram was sentenced to life. Dr Sanjines, however
was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole for first degree murder, twenty five (25) years for attempted murder, and twenty five (25) years for conspiracy to commit murder. The twenty five (25) year sentences for attempted murder and conspiracy were ordered to run concurrently to each other and consecutively to the life sentence.
Sanjines proposed a couple of wacky theories to explain his ex-wife's murder including that her relatives in New York had hired someone to end her suffering because she was terminally ill. His girlfriend, Amy Marcum was convinced to make tapes of their conversations and Sanjies was ultimately compelled to take a plea deal sparing him the death penalty.
Ingram spendt 25 years in prison until his sentence was commuted by outgoing Tennessee governor Bill Haslam in 2019.
Ingram's clemency application says he wasn't strong enough to withstand the "evil influence and manipulation" of Sanjines' ex-husband, Jorge Ariel Sanjines, who was sentenced to life in prison.
Ingram spent more time in prison than outside prison. He had become a pastor, gotten several degrees, and was considered reformed.
Gina Sanjines, now partially blind said: "My biggest worry, again, isn't just for me and my family," she said. "It's for the citizens of this state. A murderer is going to be let out of prison."
I never discovered what branch of medicine Dr. Sanjines practiced or where he got his title. Presumably he was an intelligent and competent man having immigrated to a foreign country and owning a popular business in a newly developed very busy commercial area, and living in an upscale community. Consumed by jealousy and rage he made a series of stupid decisions starting with openly talking about having his wife killed and ending up with him behind bars for life.
He is, however, eligible for parole on September 17th, 2026.

    • Police Chief Len Price says that Tyler was told he couldn't take anything from the house until matters were settled in Probate Court.
    • Police Chief Len Price says that the town of Woodstock had to pay to clean up the suicide scene.
    • Police Chief Len Price says that the cops didn't find any money or gold in John's house.
    • Brian learns that Jerry Lightsey is a family friend of Tyler's. Lightsey is especially good friends with Tyler's mother, Maya. And comes to Miss Hicks's house regularly.
    • Tyler gave Officer Jerry Lightsey a tour of the house he is building using items he took from John's property.
    • Jerry Lightsey was winking and implying that the trailer was a "different trailer" not John's trailer.
    • Maya tells Brian that Jerry Lightsey is stressed over Tyler's legal situation, and that Jerry is eagerly waiting to retire in 2017. Jerry is tired of having to choose between his friends and his job.
February 2016
  • Reta says it was "during this time" that she "spilled her guts" to Brian Reed.
  • February 16: Reta and Charlie meet with the ADA in Centerville. The ADA wants Reta to return for the grand jury on February 24.
  • February 24: At the grand jury, Tyler is charges with the theft of two vehicles, two buses, one trailer and the lumber stored in the trailer.
    • During this trip, Reta makes the decision to sell the McLemore house and property that had been in Mary Grace's family for over 100 years. According to Reta: There was no way I could stop the trespassing and vandalizing of the house and property. Every time I went over there, it was another window broken, another broken lock, just pure meanness! We were taking one step forward and three steps backwards. I had dealt with the odor, the heat, the cold, the dampness, dead rats, and destruction long enough. I really felt that I would get a call any day telling me the house had been burned down. I just could not take it anymore. My mind was made up, I had no choice but to sell the place. Of course, the financial situation was another reason. It really broke my heart.
April 2016
  • April 1: Reta makes a deal to sell the house to the Burt's.
  • April 16: Reta is back in Alabama. Mary Grace had been referred to a surgeon concerning her lifelong condition on her leg, so, I wanted to be there to discuss her options with the doctor. She let him know quickly he was not cutting on her leg. And I [Reta] totally agreed.
  • We moved more stuff from Mary Grace’s to storage, boarded up another window that had been broken out and then I called an Auctioneer to come and pick up anything that was left. At this point I felt I had done all I could do.
  • April 26: Reta heads back to Florida.
August 2016
  • August 11: The sale of the house closes.
Spring, 2016
Summer, 2016
  • June 7: Cheryl turns 44
  • August: Cheryl and Jeff's 13th Anniversary.
  • August 23: Jeff Dodson elected mayor of Woodstock.

  • Are you going to be doing this in-person unemployment event in Frankfort? -- So, we don't have an announcement about the in-person Frankfort Unemployment for next week at the moment. One thing we want to make sure we do is everyone who drove up in the last couple days, that left their names, they need to be helped.
  • One of my early executive orders allowed people who are unemployed to be on Medicaid through July 31, is that going to be extended? We’ll make sure we get the right answer.Sec. Friedlander takes overWe are reaching out to all those individuals who had applied for and received presumptive eligibility to get them on Medicaid, regular Medicaid. At this point there are 6 individuals that we’re worried about and we are working on them right now.

Full Notes
  • It’s 4 o’clock, on this Thursday, June 18th which is also my daughter’s birthday who turns 10 today, so I’m going to do my best to get through this in an hour. Let’s start the way we always start, by knowing that no matter how long it takes, we’re going to get through COVID-19 and we’re going to get through it together. And we’re going to address all the challenges that are in front of us. We are going to come out on the other side stronger, better, more compassionate people, better prepared for the future. We’re going to take the lessons that we have learned and we’re going to make sure that we make the changes that are necessary so the next time that we face a challenge, whether like this or something else -that we are ready, that we can help everyone as quickly as possible, that we lose fewer lives in relation to any pandemic. Our goal is always, no matter what we’re doing, it has gotta be to improve, to do better, and to continue to serve our fellow human beings and Kentuckian. One way that we can help our fellow Kentuckians as we move forward is filling out our census. This is incredibly important, I know we have been asking people to go online for multiple reasons such as getting an absentee ballot but remember, this is absolutely critical moving forward, it’s how we get funding in so many different parts of our safety net that has been so needed here in the last several months. If you haven’t filled out your census it’s your obligation and duty as a citizen to do it, please spend the 2 minutes to get it done. We’re going to start with a COVID update today, we’re then going to move into a couple of other topics. But first, while we have had more topics today than we have had yesterday, it still remains in a manageable area.
  • Positive cases today: 234
  • Probable cases: 351
  • Total confirmed cases: 13,197
  • We have to make sure that we can keep our numbers of new cases in this type of range. To give you an idea of how that compares to a couple other places that are struggling right now, AZ is about 7M people compared to our 4.5M and they had 2,500 new cases on Wednesday, 2,300 on Tuesday - think about that. That’s almost 25% of our cases, just in a couple of days. Let’s remember, while these numbers are in an area where we still have reopening on track, we still have capacity in our healthcare systems to take care of people that it’s a very fragile place where we are. We need to continue to follow the healthy at work rules. We need to continue to wear masks - and those that aren’t out there, I know there's a number - we need you to reconsider. It’s not a test of your manhood whether you wear a mask or not, it’s a test of your compassion and maybe of your faith if you are willing to wear one of these to protect your fellow human being. We all have a duty to each other, even folks that we’ve never met, and every health official is saying wearing a mask can help protect them.
  • New cases by county: 43x Jefferson, 33x Shelby, 14x Harrison, 13x Fayette, 12x Scott, 8x Boone, 8x Jackson, 7x Kenton, 7x Warren, 5x Graves, 5x Madison, 4x Clay, 4x Taylor, 3x Daviess, 3x Franklin, 3x McCracken, 3x Woodford, 2x Bullitt, 2x Calloway, 2x Campbell, 2x Clark, 2x Fulton, 2x Jessamine, 2x Laurel, 2x Marion, 2x Spencer, 2x Union, 2x Washington, 1x Adair, 1x Barren, 1x Boyle, 1x Bracken, 1x Carroll, 1x Casey, 1x Edmonson, 1x Fleming, 1x Garrard, 1x Green, 1x Hardin, 1x Hart, 1x Henderson, 1x Henry, 1x Letcher, 1x Lewis, 1x Logan, 1x Marshall, 1x Mason, 1x Mercer, 1x Monroe, 1x Montgomery, 1x Muhlenberg, 1x Nelson, 1x Pike, 1x Pulaski, 1x Rockcastle, 1x Simpson, 1x Trigg, 1x Whitley, 1x Wolfe
  • Total tests conducted: 336,267 - up over 6,500 since yesterday; we continue to be on a good trajectory. However, the makeup has changed a bit; I think we’re getting more from elective procedures in hospitals and fewer people signing up for some of the drive thru testing that’s out there. We need people to do both. We can be safer, we can reopen more, later we can look at increasing capacity of things, if we can keep our testing up, and that includes our drive thru testing. We’ve got to know some of the asymptomatic rate out there and we have to be able to catch those cases.
  • The reason to read these off each day is to remind us that it’s everywhere in the state. As we see, say today from Shelby or what we saw from Warren, it can go from a few cases to a lot really quickly. Let’s make sure we are doing our best, knowing that even with reopening/summer, we’re still living in the midst of a worldwide health pandemic.
  • Total hospitalized: 2,482
  • Currently hospitalized: 400; this is for COVID, there are many other people hospitalized for different reasons out there, and we’re watching carefully our bed capacity, and that's the number of free beds. Not just number of beds that don’t have COVID patients, but number of free beds, to make sure if there’s a spike that we can take care of everyone who needs it.
  • Total in ICU: 975
  • Currently in ICU: 68; again, these are just the COVID patients in the ICU, but it’s remaining fairly low
  • Total recovered: 3,506; again I think this is really low, this is one of the least-reported numbers we get from different groups
  • New deaths today: 3 additional Kentuckians
  • Total deaths: 520 individuals and families who need us. This is down 1 from yesterday, the 95 F from Grayson is said to have recovered prior to her death as so she won’t be counted in COVID-19 deaths. That doesn’t make her passing any easier for her family, let’s make sure we remember her too.
  • New deaths by county: New deaths by county: 91 F Jefferson, 87 M Logan, 79 M Perry
  • All losses are a loss for Kentucky. Let’s light those houses up green and let’s ring those bells at 10am. This is a reminder that we are thinking of the Kentuckians we’ve lost, their families, and their communities. It’s the color of compassion and renewal as their souls move from their bodies to a better place.
  • Racial breakdown of all cases: 73.53% Caucasian, 14.92% Black or African-American, 4.65% Asian, 6.22% Multiracial
  • Ethnicity breakdown of all cases: 82.79% non-Hispanic and 17.12% Hispanic
  • Racial breakdown of all deaths: 79.67% Caucasian, 16.84% Black or African-American, 1.64% Asian, 1.85% Multiracial
  • Ethnicity breakdown of all deaths: 96% non-Hispanic and 4% Hispanic
  • Long Term Care Facilities: 25 new residents and 7 new staff positive from yesterday, and 2 more deaths of residents and two additional facilities have at least one COVID case. 1,577 residents, 754 staff, 334 deaths
  • Let’s remember throughout this weekend, even though we’re allowed to get together with folks which we weren’t before, we have to be careful. We’ll have a release giving our numbers of cases, and those who have passed, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of this week. We’ve been asked by the federal government to upload data for Sundays, so that means we’ll have to bring in our people and get those numbers. We were trying to give them one day off, but we will put that out via release this Sunday, I know that’s a change.
  • Tomorrow is a special day in America’s History. It is known as Juneteenth. Juneteenth is a day that is recognized when Major General Gordon Granger led Union soldiers into Galveston, TX to bring news that the Civil War had ended and to read general order #3 that stated, in accordance with Abraham Lincoln’s emancipation proclamation, all enslaved people are free, and former masters and enslaved people have absolute equality of person and property rights. I believe this is oftentimes known as the true end of slavery in the United States. The date that the very last part of our country had this order read. Sadly, it was several years after the Emancipation Proclamation itself. During these times when we have heard voice and we have seen the frustration of hundreds of years of ramifications of slavery, discrimination, Jim Crow and segregation, I think it’s more and more important that we remind everybody of this dark chapter in our history and that it’s impacts continue to linger and that we celebrate the dates that at least portions of it ended. Today I am signing a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth here in the Commonwealth, I think it’s the first time it has been recognized. I am going to ask the legislature to recognize it as a state holiday through legislation that would have to pass in the next general assembly but I think it’s time, I think it’s the right thing to do and I’m going to do a ceremonial signing today and I’m going to ask Sec. Michael Brown to read it before I sign it
  • Sec Brown takes over
  • Thank you governor and thank you for giving me the opportunity and the honor to read this to the public:
  • Whereas, during the civil war over 200,000 African-Americans fought bravely in the Union armed forces to secure their freedom from slavery and preserve this union. Many sacrificed their lives for the ultimate freedom of their families. And whereas, Juneteenth, National Freedom Day, celebrates the events of June 19th, 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger led Union soldiers into Galveston, Texas to bring news that the civil war had been ended and to read Order #3 which stated, in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln's emancipation proclamation, all enslaved African-American people were free and entitled to absolute equality of personal and property rights. And whereas, following the statement which, unjustly and unconscionably, came two and half years after the emancipation proclamation leaving African-Americans enslaved, even though President Lincoln had freed them. June 19th became the emancipation date of the enslaved African-Americans who had long suffered and fought for freedom, justice, and equality. And whereas, throughout America, Juneteenth celebrations are convened on June 19th to celebrate African-American history, journey, and culture. And whereas, Juneteenth commemorates the strength and courage of African-Americans, the contributions of African-Americans to the building of American institutions, wealth, innovations, and their ultimate triumph over extreme adversity through sheer determination and overwhelming tenacity. And whereas, Kentuckians must continue to work toward a more equitable and just Commonwealth while recognizing the horrors of slavery and it’s legacy. And whereas, recognition of Juneteenth reflects the Commonwealth’s resounding belief in liberty and equality for every citizen. Now therefore I, Andy Beshear, Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky do hereby proclaim June 19th 2020 as Juneteenth National Freedom Day in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
  • Governor Beshear Signs the order
  • I also wanted to provide an update about something that I was able to do, before COVID hit, it happened on my 3rd day in office. It was an attempt not just to do the right thing, but to correct an injustice which has been the chronic disenfranchisement of so many people in KY, but especially our African-American population. That’s when I signed an Executive Order restoring voting rights to all felons that had committed non-violent, non-sexual crimes, and had completed their sentences. It would happen automatically. At that time, we estimated that about 80,000 people got their voting rights back right then. It was a moment where, just the stroke of a pen, could restore some dignity and give people a voice. And not just in public but at the ballot box and I remember two individuals who were getting their rights restored, one having his twin daughters who had never been able to see him go and cast a ballot. He had lost his rights when he was 18, he had never been able to vote. I remember handing him one of the pens and it’s a moment that will sit with me for a long time. It was one of the best days I’ve had doing this job. As of today, because that executive order was automatic, 175,053 ex-offenders have now had their right to vote restored. Now each of these individuals still has to register and even though the registration date has passed for the primary everybody can still register for the general and we’d love to see those 175,053 people registered. This was something driven by my faith and belief that people deserve second chances, that redemption is possible, and that by giving people not just the tools but the dignity to rebuild their lives that better, and better, and better outcomes are possible. I’m very excited that that number is now over double what it was the day we restored those rights.
  • Update on the Team KY fund.
  • Lt Gov. takes over
  • As of today, the number of households that have been helped by the Team KY fund are 421, and the total value of the vouchers and the dollars that have gone to those households is 350,215. There are currently 398 applications that are pending for approval, they are just waiting on additional documentation. I want to remind folks that the web address that they can go to to apply is That is the community action partnership of KY’s website, and the reason that we are partnering with them goes beyond the Team KY fund, because as an applicant when you apply for the Team KY fund, you can have access to our funds if you qualify, but you also now have access to all of the services provided by Community Action which helps with job placement, affordable housing, healthcare, childcare, education and job training. There are a litany of other resources that are accessible through this application, I would recommend for all Kentuckians that are in need of assistance to apply and take advantage of all of the resources from Community Action of KY as well as the resources form the Team KY fund.
  • Governor takes over:
  • Quick announcement on federal financial aid: COVID-19 has forced us to an inflection point in our economy, and I believe we must think strategically about what we want our recovery to look like. Now is the time to prepare and train our workforce for the years ahead. That’s why I’m urging all graduating highschool seniors, parents and adult learners to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA form. Kentucky’s overall FAFSA numbers are down 2.7% from this time last year. For returning Pell eligible students, with the greatest financial need, the percentage decrease is 3.8%. We can do better in KY. These are dollars to help break, oftentimes, generational cycles of poverty that are still there, still on the table, and we want to make sure people take advantage of. Filling out one of these forms is a free process that most applicants can complete in under ½ hour. It is a crucial step in preparing for college and can help provide certainty to many of our KY families. Each year the US Dept of Ed provides more than $120B in federal grants, loans, and work study funds to students, and we want Kentuckians to capture as much of that money as possible.
  • Finally before we open it up for questions we want to go over a couple things related to unemployment. First, yesterday there were some folks - 67 of them exactly - that stood in line for I think about 10 hours in the sun, and right as it was their time to be helped, they were told that at 7pm, our system shuts down. That’s to send payments through, to get them processed to go to the federal government, but what an awful feeling that must have been. My request last night, and I’ve been checking on it throughout the morning, was that everyone one of these people needed to be contacted today, I requested it before noon, and that they needed to have priority in getting helped. So, I am told that as of 3:15pm, 61 of the 67 have had their claims resolved. That doesn’t mean necessarily that they were approved though I think most of them were, but that their claims were fully resolved, and 6 are in process. I can’t imagine what that must have felt like, but we’re going to get those claims done.
  • Separately, I was asked the other day, why aren’t we out, in offices, around the state. My response was, “COVID”. It’s a worldwide health pandemic that has prevented a lot of face-to-face. But the history behind where unemployment is now, and what we had to work with when this hit, is a little more complicated than that. There used to be a lot more unemployment offices. A lot had happened in 2017 that we are feeling the brunt of today. Basically what it says is that when you develop a system - this wasn’t just in one administration - but when you develop a system that is set to tell people “no” when you need to tell people “yes” it is much more difficult. And when you make deep cuts, in areas that are supposed to be there to help people at their lowest point, you have fewer people to help your population when you're at your lowest point. I remember this from 2017 when it was announced when 29 unemployment offices were cut, we used to have 51 all over the Commonwealth, they were reduced down to 21. At that point 95 employees who worked in unemployment, who were there to help people, who were trained in getting these claims through, were sent to other parts of state government meaning a loss of critical personal. I believe at that time, face-to-face interactions were removed and what they had, as of 2017, was 12 people that would answer a phone in a call center. On top of that, the software they were using was 20 years old and had never been fully funded or upgraded in the budget. I believe they created a fund to start some of those dollars around 2018 then the budget was cut in half over time. In 2010 they had $41M dollars in the budget, and that’s not dollars going out, that’s the office itself and it went from that to just $25M in 2018. So we took offices that were cut almost 50%, an antiquated system that was designed to tell people “no”, and claims that went in 2019 from 190,000 claims all year long to having 900,000 in just 3 months. And it is a perfect storm that results in so many people that have had to wait far, far too long, that haven’t been helped and I know they are at their wits ends. I know I have been saying it for weeks and it’s not a solace to those who are struggling but we are working our hardest, we will continue to do better. Despite all this, this is still my administration, these are still our folks, and we have got to get this done. Today we had the largest number of adjudicators working in one location that we have had. They are going to do the same thing tomorrow. My hope, while it won’t be next week, but the week after, that we can have people back, in areas around the state, able to help them so that people don’t have to travel. But they haven’t been in those offices, with the exception of those 12 folks, since 2017. So we’re not just having to restart, we’re having to rebuild but we have to do it really fast. We have some meetings set up tomorrow with some outside folks to give their thoughts on what kinds of assistance they can provide. I will take help from anywhere if it will get people's cases processed and paid. This is our commitment moving forward and it’s something that we absolutely have to get done. I want to put it in context that it’s not just KY having problems with claims. In MI they have 340,000 claims outstanding, in TN they have 309,000, Maryland is about 71,000, Pennsylvania is at 85,000, and Virginia is at 75,000. All around the country you see the same challenge. All around the country we had systems designed to not help people and this is what happens. Now we see, and it’s good to see, and people from all parties are asking why isn’t unemployment easier? Why can’t people get the help they need? I hope we see the same bipartisan commitment going forward. I hope we see that the safety net isn’t something that people are out there abusing. It’s something that is necessary in a time of crisis. And I hope we will never starve these systems again, that we will maintain and improve what we have, and recognize that everyone needs some help sometimes. And once in every other hundred years, or more frequently, a whole lot of us need help really fast.
With that, we’ll open it up to questions, we’ve got a number of folks today - Joe Sanka, Dia Davidson, Joe Ragusa, Phil Pendleton, and Daniel Dirocco
  • On Juneteenth, what exactly is your office/the state going to be doing to honor that date? -- Today is the first proclamation I believe that's ever been signed for Juneteenth, or certainly the first publicly. We’re going to continue to work on our efforts to address historic inequities, including our pledge on healthcare, where we’re going to sign everyone up, while I’m governor, for some form of coverage that they qualify for. But we’re prioritizing our black and African-American communities because, not just historic inequalities, but COVID is killing them at twice the rate they make up of our population. There’s some other events going on that we hope we have many people in the administration focusing on, and we’re going to start our efforts to get it addressed as a state holiday. We hope this time next year it will be one of our official state holidays.
  • (Poor audio for the start of the question - something about issues with long lines related to unemployment) You say there are issues with long lines …. Questions since March…. People are hungry, people are losing their homes, their cars. To say that we’re going to do something, sometime, is not good enough. They’re saying that there’s CARES money they should be getting, they're not getting, and that’s about to expire July 31. People need a definitive answer, not just saying that we’re trying. And they appreciate that you’re trying, but they can’t take that to their landlord, and can’t take that to the grocery store. What can we offer to our fellow Kentuckians? -- Well what we can offer to our fellow Kentuckians is that we have more resources, going towards addressing their claims, than we have in at least the past 8 years. I can’t talk about what was available during the Great Recession, because I know that there were federal dollars that flowed into it. We have more folks on site here for the very first in-person help, and understand that COVID has made this difficult in 2 ways, #1 causing widespread unemployment, and #2 for a period of time making it very dangerous to be face-to-face, and what we’ve learned is face-to-face is really important. It’s really, really important. We are seeing more claims resolved in the last several days, and today people are getting very definitive answers before they leave. We’re going to make that here, moving out, that there are more face-to-face opportunities in every single community so that you don’t have to drive. But I also want to be transparent with people. Our system isn’t going to change overnight, it’s a 20 year old system. And it takes time to train people, but we were doing it today; if you noticed we had a person helping and a person being trained, so that we can have more tier two and tier three folks to help. It’s gonna be a process to come out of it, I wish I could tell people that it’s going to happen tomorrow, but with the number of claims and where we are in a starved system, that wouldn’t be me being honest with them. My hope is that with some outside help, we can certainly speed up this process, but we are seeing I believe improvements as we go, and they need to be improvements that last, that are permanent. If we help somebody get their first check but their second one gets held up, that’s not good enough, and it doubles your work. So while I keep telling people that we’re going to keep hustling, going to keep trying, part of it is hustling through the number of claims. But we’re going to take even what we’ve learned in the past 3 days, and put it to work, and continue and continue to do better. Now, nobody should be evicted, because we have a ban on evictions, here in Kentucky. But I hear all the problems, I hear all the concerns, and I know people are frustrated, and while I can’t feel that frustration, I’m frustrated. I’m frustrated with our system, I’m frustrated with the amount of time it’s taking for claims to happen, I’m frustrated that the numbers seem to change from day to day. My frustration isn’t going to solve it, but hopefully my motivation, and my willingness to spend at this point whatever it takes to fix it, will help fix it.
  • Yesterday Karen asked for the number of people who were working to process claims. -- Today, in the facility, we had 29 individuals, I had said it was 30 yesterday. We went over 61 of the 67 names, and the report had been 25. So 61 of 67 have had their claims resolved, the other 6 were in process, there is someone assigned to them and I’m told there was at least one phone call that was made. But the reason that it happened is because the system, up until today, automatically shut down at 7 pm every night cause you have to send those claims to the federal government and you have to process the first set of payments. We’re going to be able to go longer today, but people wouldn’t get paid if the system doesn’t do it overnight. But, it still wasn’t right, and it doesn’t seem right. Those people - we’ve got to help.
  • Last question here, what was my reaction to today’s Supreme Court DACA ruling, and how it impacts Kentucky dreamers -- I think it is a decision that was made not just under the law but with people’s heart and with people’s faith. These are individuals who have never known another country. Listen, they’re Americans. This is the only country that they have known. I believe they’re just as American as any of the rest of us. And I think it was the right decision.
  • The organizers of Fancy Farm announced today that they’d continued to have their events this summer, but instead of having it outdoors they’d move it indoors, do you think that was a responsible decision and do you plan on going? -- I haven't seen the plans for Fancy Farm, I’d have questions about the number of people that are allowed inside and also what their other setups are gonna be. I’ll only go if I believe that it’s not only safe, but it is a safe example for the public on how to do things. I’ve been trying the best I can to follow the advice that I’m giving to people. For me it won’t be a political decision this year, it will be entirely COVID-related. I’ve been to more Fancy Farms now in the last several years, haven’t missed one in awhile, but I want to make sure that it is a truly responsible approach that they’re doing, and before that I’d like to see their plans.

2020.03.29 22:43 mr_tyler_durden Notes and Highlights of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s Live Update March 29, 2020

Notes and Highlights of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s Live Update March 29, 2020
Thank you to Muted_Independent for their help on these notes
Note: We may need to paraphrase, but the notes are accurate
Watch here:
  • 439 Cases (+45), 9 Deaths (+0),
  • New cases: 15x Fayette, 9x Jefferson, 5x Hopkins, 4 Boyd, 2 McCracken, 2 Taylor, 1 Calloway, 1x Lewis, 1x Nelson, 1x Scott, 1x Franklin, 1x Campbell, 1x Kenton, 1x unknown
  • Slides from update
Full Notes
  • We will get through this and we will get through this together. Say it with me. We will get through this together. It’s important we say this, because things will get tougher as we move forward. We need to make sure we do everything it takes to defeat this. I’m proud to be your governor. We know it can take a serious toll on our people. You are doing what it takes even when it’s hard to understand.
  • The way to combat it is to stay away from each other. This goes against everything we were brought up doing, but we need to do this.
  • I know you’re out there congregating on the golf course, you’re putting us back. You could have harmed someone else.
  • We will never be able to enforce our way into the type of behaviour we need to protect people. We need to encourage our way there and we need to invoke positive social peer pressure.
  • Social media must be filled up with positive things. While we need to stay apart, we are more connected than ever in our lives. But it’s more needed and necessary (#TeamKentucky #KYTogether #Patriot #HealthyAtHome) ewe have seen an outpouring of examples on social media that are incredible and we want to keep showing them. (Social media images here) Shows a Kroger having tags on the floor in between isles. So thank you. This is the positive social peer pressure we need to encourage. A 7-month-old is shown being healthy at home. Van lear, KY rings their bell at 10AM. It can be lonely and isolating to be healthy at home. So hearing those bells, reminds people we are together in this and we are thinking of you. Showing green lights lit for the Kentuckian we lost in Kenton County. Showing young adult being creative(playing hacky sack with toilet paper, lol)
  • I was asked about rural hospitals laying off their employees -- We got the answer back, they are all simply furloughs. Thank you ARH for doing what you have. We wa
  • Dale Hollow Park - We have added a few officers. We did have an issue with a bass tournament in TN that led to several boaters being in KY but we are all posting additional signs and added people there to monitor it.
  • We can’t let a state park, basketball court, or a grocery store violate our rules. It puts peoples lives on the line.
  • Again golf courses, if we want to keep these open, we need to keep social distancing. I’ll ask that the community's mayors and judges, keep track of their activities, and if they aren’t being run according to the guidelines, we will shut you down.
  • Folks that are out going on runs are great for physical health. But do this alone or with members of your household.
  • Finally stores that have the fortune of being open right now, you’ve got to engage in social distancing. Chiefly from home improvement stores that we are going to have to look into. We must find a way to use social distancing or we are going to have to find out how essential they are. Whenever we go out to places, we need to go by those guidelines
  • Dr. Stack:
  • Thank you first for all the examples of kindness we see. Some people tell me I need to smile more, I probably do. The honey bee t-shirt, and fire department with the “Don’t be honey bee” sign, and having teddy bears in windows is great and thank you. Please don’t touch the windows or the teddy bears or you defeat the purpose
  • The next few weeks are critical. NY city is bad. This is crunch time. If you do what Governor Beshear has told you to do, we can come out of this much better.
  • Churches in Graves county are planning on having service still. If you have 600 people and you are having service how are you going to feel if only 500 show up for Christmas service this year, this is not a game, this is real, if you do these things there will be people that will not be there later.
  • An individual went out of his way in Mercer county to get a test. It was positive, then he refused to isolate or tell us who he was around (contact tracing).
  • If you go out, do not congregate. It knows no geographical boundaries. It doesn’t care if you are a man, woman, or child. It doesn’t know if you’re a Democrat or Republican, it doesn't care what state you live in, it does not care.
  • I’m an ER doctor, every single shift I go to work, someone (patients) have just had their worst day. My colleagues have wondered “how do you get through it”? People have to know you care. If people know you care and your warmth comes through, people are more willing to work with you. Be kind to your neighbor and show that warmth.
  • Be thankful for all the healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, the first responders, the ems, the firefighters, the police officers, and the essential business owners, the grocery store workers and all the others. Who are staying open to get us through this, you can still smile, and it can help us get through this.
  • Now is the time more than ever to double down on all the measures our governor has asked
  • Update is pretty good
  • 45 new cases
  • Sometimes it’s the county where the individual is testing, or resides.
  • New cases: 15x Fayette, 9x Jefferson, 5x Hopkins, 4 Boyd, 2 McCracken, 2 Taylor, 1 Calloway, 1x Lewis, 1x Nelson, 1x Scott, 1x Franklin, 1x Campbell, 1x Kenton, 1x unknown
  • At least as of 4pm no new death. If there is one we will put it on our site (assuming his Facebook)
  • Philadelphia vs St. Louis graph is shown. (Image)
  • We have to be strong and ready. We have to get done what we have to get doen
  • We have about 4.5 million people with a virus that spreads very rapidly with 18,500 beds, 1,300 ICU beds, and a little more than that in ventilators. It’s better that we remain disciplined and keep to the guidelines, or we will lose. Every step we take to flatten that curve, is lives saved.
  • We are working on capacity right now and preparing.
  • We will hit a critical point in our capacity, which we already are on many thing (PPE, etc)
  • Accurate source, one source of info is
  • COVID hotline: 800-722-5725
  • When we are seeing this surge get bigger, it doesn’t mean we all need a hospital bed. Most symptoms are mild. We need to make sure that the hospital bed is there for the people who wouldn’t make it without it. I want to thank those who have it that are weathering it out at home, you’re heros, and I will make sure you have what you need
  • We have been doing everything to protect our seniors and it’s been tough. Know we are protecting them with these hard steps, and making sacrifices we are all doing every day.
  • Social distancing doesn’t mean social isolation. Use the internet to communicate via Facetime/Zoom.
  • If you have the ability to help with donating or creating PPE, please do so.
  • If you’ve lost or can’t get a job due to the virus, sign up for unemployment. We want everyone to sign up that qualifies. But this will not last forever. (Unemployment slides: 1 & 2)
  • Also sign up for Medicaid. We are doing everything we can to make sure everyone can get it (How to apply slide). In a Pandemic, everyone needs this more than ever.
  • I want to make sure we in the government do whatever we can. When we do make it through this, we will rebuild, we will restock, we will make sure we come out of this that creates a bright future for everybody.
  • Has someone at Green River correctional complex tested positive -- 2 members of administration staff that have no direct contact with the prisoners.
  • County Jails which have released a number of folks due to the coronavirus and the head of public advocacy calling for a wider release on certain grounds -- We do have draft plans in front of me. Our hope is to put those into place in the coming weeks. Steps will be taken, and be more limited than what the public advocacy is suggesting.
  • Governor announced an eastern KY county (Floyd) said someone tested positive -- Sometimes it’s where it’s tested, sometimes it’s where they are a resident and sometimes it’s where they take the test. But I will own up to that mistake. But it happens. But remember….EVERY county has this virus. We are in this as one state and in it together
  • I need you to stay in Kentucky, unless it’s to care for a relative or got to work
  • The KY COVID website says there have been about 5,550 tests but you said 15,000 can you clarify the discrepancy -- So the 5,500 is the number reported directly to us. All labs are trying to do the fastest they can. We can estimate from our p[ositive rate. Yes there have been more than 15,000 tests in KY, the vast majority negative 439 positive we can confirm
  • Are positive tests from the private labs being counted in the total infected count from KY? -- Yes
  • Total private labs testing in our state? -- They are running tests, many are testing in all 50 states, and others are just coming online and we hope as time goes on we have more accurate information
  • Update on infant from yesterday -- Let me see if we can get that information before we close today
  • Communications problems with U of L labs -- We could use more improvement. Part of it is the interaction with the public health dept in Louisville, which is a great operating unit. We’re all working on it but we are working on getting all the info as quickly as we need. UK’s capacity is increasing, as well as U of L’s. I’d take an increase in testing over reporting to us every day
  • Update Boyd county positive test (4) -- They can be tested there and not necessarily resident but we have at least four as of our records
  • Concern about Lowes and tractor supply stores having lots of people in them no distancing? -- We are going to be working on this tomorrow and they should be doing everything to enforce social distancing. If you show up to one of these stores that are crowded DON’T go in there, you’ll get the virus.
  • Reports of coronavirus in air for 3 hours -- We believe it spreads through droplets, coughs, and sneezes. Studies are being done about it remaining in the air. This would be an area with like a healthcare facility with close quarters or with someone very infected if it is true. We’re not talking about being outside or in larger buildings.
  • What is your response to Savannah Maddox’s floor amendment to House bill 322 to allow for people/businesses to sue KY over the restrictions? -- Well, I’m trying to save lives. I’m going to continue doing the right thing. And isn’t this silly, when we are all supposed to be doing what we are supposed to do..all I’ve got on that....(He trailed off)
  • Question on TN and if Andy has talked to Bill Lee (Gov) and if restaurants and bars have been closed -- Health departments were reporting people crossing the lines to go to these restaurants and bars or other retail in-person that are still open in TN.
  • Updated on cases that have recovered -- Yesterday’s numbers is the best we have (over 60)
  • What is the projected peak date in KY? -- It’s all based on limited data. We know the next few weeks will be critical, and that will impact the peak. We have to keep the peak below what our healthcare system can handle
  • If someone was unemployed and exhausted all their funds before the coronavirus what should they do now? -- There are extensions that have been made (up to 13 weeks) we will get you an update about people that were already on unemployment.
  • Experimental drugs for COVID-19, some have been used in clinical trials. -- I’ll have to get you answer from CHFS
  • Activity at fairgrounds in Louisville, is that part of our efforts? -- We are looking at plans that include the fair grounds and that is one of dozens of plans we are looking at.
The next two weeks are critical. We are in the surge. We will lose more people, but we have to work together more than ever. We need to be more responsible now than we’ve ever been before. You ARE making a difference. I know it’s making a difference. I need you to be strong. As the days begin to be nicer, I need you to be strong. We won’t need to be healthy at home forever, but we need it now more than ever. Let's make sure that the sacrifice we are making isn't in vain. Let’s not put our self interest first. I believe that while this creates anxiety, difficulty, and fear, if we go about it right, we will get through it. This is our time, we talk about the greatest generation, this is our time to prove that we have what it takes. And I have faith in you.

2020.03.15 00:48 FinTheGiant The Tennessee Titans - Composed of Players who grew up closest to Tennessee

Which current NFL players align with the Tennessee Titans as their hometown team? This is the 13th of 32 posts about the realignment of NFL teams based off the players hometowns. I did this by researching which town each active NFL player went to High School in, and then matching it with the closest NFL city geographically. Last time we saw the new Jacksonville Jaguars. Let's see how the new Tennessee Titans stack up!

Position Player Hometown
QB Phillip Rivers Athens, AL
RB Kerryon Johnson Madison, AL
WR Golden Tate Hendersonville, TN
WR A.J. Brown Starkville, MS
WR D.K Metcalf Oxford, MS
TE Hunter Henry Little Rock, AR
LT George Fant Bowling Green, KY
LG Shaq Mason Columbia, TN
C/G Elgton Jenkins Clarksdale, MS
RG Ramon Foster Ripley, TN
RT Jeremey Parnell Gosnell, AR
EDGE Trey Flowers Huntsville, AL
DI Chris Jones Houston, MS
DI Dontari Poe Memphis, TN
EDGE Dont'a Hightower Lewisburg, TN
LB Benardrick Mckinney Tunica, MS
LB Avery Williamson Milan, TN
LB K.J Wright Olive Branch, MS
CB Jalen Ramsey Brentwood, TN
CB Joejuan Williams Nashville, TN
FS Harrison Smith Knoxville, TN
SS George Odum Millington, TN
P Dustin Colquitt Knoxville, TN
Bench Players:
QB CJ Beathard (Franklin, TN), RB Jordan Wilkins (Cordova, TN), RB Benny Cunningham (Madison, TN), WR Randall Cobb (Alcoa, TN), WR Chester Rodgers (Huntsville, AL), WR Anthony Miller (Memphis, TN), WR Mose Frazier (Memphis, TN), TE Dawson Knox (Brentwood, TN), TE Charles Clay (Little Rock, AR), C Ben Jones (Centerville, AL), G Wesley Johnson (Nashville, TN), DL Kony Ealy (New Madrid, MO), DT Jeffrey Simmons (Macon, MS), DE Derek Barnett (Brentwood, TN), DE Kendall Donnerson (Maumelle, AL), LB Joel Iyiegbuniwe (Bowling Green, KY), LB Reggie Ragland (Madison, AL), LB Genard Avery (Grenada, MS), S Rashaan Gaulden (Thompson's Station, TN), P Brjtton Colquitt (Knoxville, TN)
I gathered the data for this team last summer. Not all information may be up to date.
The re-aligned Tennessee Titans are one of the most balanced teams I have seen so far. They have a plethora of weapons on offense, including three good receivers and the talented Hunter Henry. Phillip Rivers should find success in this offense, as rookie receivers A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf can stretch the field while he can find Golden Tate and Hunter Henry underneath. Kerryon Johnson is the running back here in Tennessee, and he will be running behind a very good interior offensive line. While we know Phillip Rivers will stay healthy, this offense hopes players like Kerryon Johnson and Hunter Henry stay on the field.
Based on their defensive personnel, this team plays in a 4-3 defense. On the defensive line, superstar Chris Jones is paired with his former teammate Dontari Poe on the inside. On the edge, Dont'a Hightower is paired with former Patriots teammate Trey Flowers. In addition to those versitale edge players, the Titans have a solid and reliable linebacker core with veterans Benardrick Mckinney, Avery Williamson, and K.J Wright. Their secondary is headlined by superstars Harrison Smith and Jalen Ramsey. Overall, the Titans have many talented players and should make a playoff push.
Overall there are 21 players from Tennessee, 8 players from Mississippi, 7 players from Alabama, 4 players from Arkansas, 2 players from Missouri, and 1 player from Kentucky on this team. Because Tennessee is located in the middle of the southeast and borders 8 other states, players for these Titans come from a variety of states. To my surprise, only 2 players are actually from Nashville, however there are several that come from the suburbs of Nashville. The most common city for where these players are from is Huntsville, Alabama. Despite being very rural, northern Mississippi produces a good amount of NFL players. A map of where the players on this team are from can be found here:
Comment your thoughts on this team, and if there is any big player that I may have left off. If you would like to see a specific team next, comment your request here.

2020.03.04 16:58 Ghost-Quartet 28 Albums You May Have Missed From The 2010s

The far less exciting followup to Monday’s 28+ Albums You May Have Missed In 2019, here's a compilation of the decade writeups so I can have full closure on the series. I curated these writeups in conjunction to the 2019 ones as a way to spice it up, there’s no theme to them really I just selected albums on a day to day basis that I felt were a nice contrast to the 2019 album I was writing about, but now that they aren’t paired that’s a moot point so here they’ve been presented chronologically. These albums (and in many cases these artists) were super underrated/ignored by pop fans and I’m here to tell you why.
Yes, I didn't have anything from 2010.

Made4TV by Little Jackie (Motown + Rap)

  • For Fans Of: Amy Winehouse, Motown, Old-school alternative pop girls (Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, etc.)
Description: In the pantheon of weird, alternative pop/rap/r&b girls I’ve never seen Imani Coppola mentioned, which is a shame because she’s such an outspoken weirdo. (She portrayed herself as a black cowgirl literally before Lil Nas X was even conceived.) She has a huge discography that’s ripe for reevaluation, but a good place for pop fans to start would be her work as Little Jackie. Imani teamed up with producer Adam Pallin to release some more straightfoward pop music, and the blend of his lively throwback instrumentals with her fiery vocals and unusual lyrics was a winning one. Their music is loud and in-your-face, but there’s solid “older sisterly” advice underneath all the noise, and though they didn’t get a lot of commercial success they put out a few great albums. Made4TV in particular does a good job of balancing that classic Motown sound with rap, as well as her sardonic attitude with genuine heart.
Positives: Great nostalgia factor, good introduction to a fascinating artist, a fun “retro/urban” aesthetic
Potential Barriers: It’s loud and the production can be overwhelming, the lyrics are potentially obnoxious, somewhat dated
Sample Track: “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” showcases the album's fun melodies, sardonic attitude, and... unique lyricism.

Summer Of The Soda Fountain Girls by Blue Bottle Collection: (Theatre Pop)

  • For Fans Of: MIKA, Broadway, summers by the lake
Description: More of a vocal collective than a traditional band, front man Daniel Zaitchik centers the group around himself but he’s joined by a chorus of sweet voiced men and women who, with the help of spectacular musical and vocal arrangements, give the album a dreamy, fantastical feel. The songs wander through a summer’s day, bouncing between whimsical stories, lackadaisical musings, and moments of vulnerable self-reflection, all set to some of the best theatrical folk-pop around. There’s such joy and life in this album but it’s bittersweet, undercut by a sense of pathos brought about by the knowledge that every summer’s day has to end. Simultaneously an album about youth and growing up, it’s an attempt to capture something in music that’s otherwise entirely ephemeral; and, what’s more, it works. To me this album stirs up feelings of wanderlust and nostalgia, memories of a childhood I didn’t (and will never) have, but the false memories are still warm. Hopefully it can do the same for you.
Positives: Lush sonics, haunting vocals, some absolutely thrilling songs
Potential Barriers: A bit long, unconventional sounding, theatrical
Sample Track: “Chocolate Malt” is a great display of the unique, almost fairy-like energy of the album, and features lovely vocals.

What Otters Do by Shaina Taub: (Soul-Pop)

  • For Fans Of: Carole King, Sara Bareilles, songs that feel like they’re from your childhood
Description: There’s just so much heart and intelligence in everything Shaina Taub does. Her lyrics are filled with unusual imagery and wisdom, her melodies are lively, and her harmonies are always on point. If I ever get around to doing my writeup on her I’ll gush about all of her albums but I’m presenting What Otters Do here because it’s her first ever release and it’s fascinating. There’s electricity and heat on this EP, a young artist flexing her talents to see how much she can do. It draws a lot from the soulful stylings of artists like Carole King, Billy Joel, and Aretha Franklin but her unique artistic voice pushes through it all and creates some songs that feel truly one of a kind. Even her own later works aren’t quite like this explosion of color and light; albums like this are rare.
Positives: It’s endlessly creative and full of life, all of the songs are huge, it’s short.
Potential Barriers: It’s kind of a weird sounding album, these are “event” songs that might not be suited for casual listening.
Sample Track: “Make A Mess” never fails to put a smile on my face, one of my favorite songs, full stop.

All Of Me by Estelle (R&B + Rap)

  • For Fans Of: Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, overlooked r&b gems
Description: This album opens with a few truly heinous tracks where Estelle tries to establish herself as some kind of swaggering hip-hop bad girl, but these are a Trojan Horse because the rest of the album leans into a much more wholesome r&b sound. Danceable beats are combined with almost theatrical doo-wop influences and it’s a combination that’s aged surprisingly well. It’s very much an album about growing in to yourself and learning to be grateful, with wholesome messages and good vibes abound. Estelle’s husky voice is as buttery as ever and even if she tries a bit too hard some times, she manages to craft a lot of great lyrics and hooks that keep me coming back to some of the songs. This is a very ambitious project with tons of features (including a fresh faced Janelle Monáe!) and interludes, and while it’s a bit all over the place Estelle’s sheer talent makes it worth a listen.
Positives: Charisma, some super cute/uplifting songs, some old school r&b bangers
Potential Barriers: Some tracks are dated (and one song features Chr*s Br0wn), sound is rather all over the place, kinda long
Sample Track: “Love The Way We Used To” is a sweet love song.

Make Me Breakfast (2012) & Natural Disaster (2015) by Grace McLean & Them Apples (Singer-Songwriter)

  • For Fans Of: Bridgit Mendler, Fiona Apple, intimate friendship moments with your female bestie
Description: Grace McLean is one of those artists with such a magnetic presence that if you encounter her in basically any capacity, you like her. She’s got charisma for days, a sharp sense of humor, she’s gorgeous, and her brassy voice is immediately ear catching. And as if that wasn’t enough she’s a talented songwriter as well, releasing music with her trusty band Them Apples. Their first EP Make Me Breakfast is such a fun record, just five sunny, slightly humorous pop songs that show off her voice and the band’s great orchestrations. Their second EP Natural Disaster is much more experimental, LITERALLY taking us for a loop since much of the album is constructed via vocal looping. Several of the songs on the album are created using just samples of her voice, and it’s astounding that she makes fully fleshed out compositions from them. Beyond just the novelty value these are solid pop songs, with slightly darker subject matter and off-kilter but romantic lyrics.
Positives: Fun energy, great vocals, creative arrangements
Potential Barriers: Weird lyrics, both EPs are different
Sample Tracks: “My Friend’s Roommate” is funny but still catchy / “Natural Disaster” is such a weird but clever pop song

Synthetica by Metric (Synth-Rock)

  • For Fans Of: Blondie, Sleigh Bells, the emo bands of the ’00s/’10s
Description: Metric are an indie rock band who are just edgy enough to have a pop sensibility, they’re likely more popular than I’m giving them credit for but I rarely see them mentioned so I thought it would be worth it to bring up this fantastic album. Some tracks are straightforward, some tracks are more experimental, but most fall somewhere in between. These are the kind of songs that fill a room with their cavernous production; insistent percussion, shredding guitar, and big synths keep things consistently exciting and provide a great playground for the lead singer’s spunky vocals. The themes of the songs remain ever-relevant, delving into topics like the disenfranchisement of the youth, the problems posed by technology, and overall feelings of isolation. It’s not depressing, but it does pack a great punch.
Positives: Sharp lyricism, great big production
Potential Barriers: Loud, a bit esoteric
Sample Track: “Nothing But Time” is a sweeping synthpop song that still has their rock edge.

Children Of The Stars by The Orion Experience (Pop)

  • For Fans Of: Electric Light Orchestra, Marianas Trench, that period of time in the ‘10s where random indie bands kept getting huge hits
Description: Based in that beloved mid-2010s indie rock sound but with a dance-pop twist, this album overflows with energy. From the second the first track starts the album is a nonstop thrill ride of pure fun: every song has a huge melody and a ton of hooks. This album really believes that more is more, offering up disco beats, guitar solos, horn sections, and all sorts of fun tricks to keep the wave of energy going. This is a concept album with a story about love saving the universe, and so all of the songs have a campy sort of “space” aesthetic in the production and lyrics, with a cinematic feel to them that feels ripped from the Barbarella era of space operas. It would almost be too plastic if it didn’t still have a bit of that indie edge leftover, which keeps the album from being too overwhelming. This album is a forgotten time capsule of when music was painfully upbeat and optimistic.
Positives: Full of energy, fun pop perfection, great songs
Potential Barriers: Dated, kinda cheesy
Sample Track: “Children Of The Stars” is an immediate jolt of energy.

Go Back Home by Audra McDonald (Broadway)

  • For Fans Of: Joni Mitchell, Tori Kelly, healing music
Description: Audra McDonald is a master of her craft: her talents have made her one of the most awarded actresses working in theatre, and she brings all of that to this album. A collection of covers, she choses some established classics but more often than not opts for forward thinking songs from fresh composers, giving this album a very modern feeling. The simple arrangements allow the many shades of her voice to shine and create a relaxed, cabaret-esque feeling. Her soprano voice is beautiful but what really sells this album is the storytelling she does; she can fill a concert hall with her voice (and she does a few times on this album) but this album is so intimate. Few people can connect to a text quite like Audra McDonald can. Her performances on this album are stunning, and with each track it really feels like she’s right there with you telling you about love, life, and happiness.
Positives: Amazing vocals, soft thoughtful aesthetic, smart songwriting
Potential Barriers: It’s Broadway stuff which isn’t everyone’s thing
Sample Track: “Go Back Home” is touching and a little melancholy.

Femm-Isation by FEMM (EDM + Jpop)

  • For Fans Of: Charli XCX, Kesha, the pre-rock stages of the Poppy project
Description: Looking for something really commercial and plastic? This album was made by mannequins. FEMM (short for Far East Mention Mannequins) have a bizarre backstory about being leaders of an agency fighting to liberate sentient mannequins, and while this is strange it does accurately reflect this album: stylized and artificial sounding, but with messages of freedom and adventure. Drenched in autotune and #girlpower, wearing maximalist electronic production like armor, these pounding club songs capture the unapologetically fun spirit of the early 2010s perfectly while still managing to sound unique thanks to the subtle cyberpunk aesthetic. Pair all that with some fantastic visuals and we end up with a bombastic celebration of pop music from one of the most painfully underrated Jpop acts around.
Positives: HUGE pop songs, deceptively smart songwriting/production, it’s Jpop in English
Potential Barriers: It’s trashy and pretty dated
Sample Track: “Whiplash” is my favorite, a really smooth club banger.

Have Faith by Mary Testa & Michael Starobin (Artsy-Pop)

  • For Fans Of: Bjork, Tom Waits, thinking
Description: A collection of covers of everyone from Rodgers & Hammerstein to Shakespeare to Prince to Bjork to people you’ve never even heard of, this album is an avant-garde fusion of theatre and pop that’s full of surprises. Theatre legend Mary Testa’s nasal head voice and hard belt are polarizing and not conventionally “pretty,” but she’s a spellbinding performer who can bring a song to life like no other. She forms an electric center of this album, effortlessly bringing soul and humor to classic songs. Her collaborator Michael Starobin is a Broadway musical director who provides off-kilter arrangements that seem to detach the album from reality; there are so many interesting choices made on this album. It’s a phantasmagoria of music, with tracks fading in to each other to create a cohesive listening experience from front to back.
Positives: Heartfelt and thoughtful, sounds very different, lush music
Potential Barriers: It’s very out there, it’s meant to be a full listening experience rather than individual tracks
Sample Track: Her cover of Michael Smith’s “Sister Clarissa” is really sweet.

Adventures From The Ocean Of The Dead by Michelle Cross (Singer-Songwriter)

  • For Fans Of: Regina Spektor, Tori Amos, musical theatre
Description: This album is epic in the classical sense of the word in that it’s a sprawling piece of poetry telling a story, and Michelle brings out some slammin’ tunes that really bring the story to life. These songs are very memorable and deceptively catchy, Michelle knows her stuff as a composer and loads the songs with melodies from every direction; if you like piano riffs, this is the album for you. Michelle herself plays all of the characters (many of whom are male) but she’s a talented enough vocalist to pull it off; in particular she brings out a husky part of her voice that’s very appealing. Though the album gets off to something of a slow start, once the action hits the high seas it kicks into high gear and we’re treated to this wonderful phantasmagoria of crazy characters and situations, all brought to life by the magic of Michelle’s catchy melodies, lush piano arrangements, and paper doll art.
Positives: The songs are beautiful, there’s a wonderful sense of adventure to the album.
Potential Barriers: The album tells a cohesive story, all of the parts are played by the same singer
Sample Track: “Leucade’s Rock” is a haunting ballad for a mermaid.

Love Stuff by Elle King (Country + Rock)

  • For Fans Of: Pistol Annies, early Lana del Rey, dark “witchy” energy
Description: Elle King’s one-hit “Ex’s and Oh’s” has a bit of an edge to it but the saucy, flirty little number doesn’t quite prepare you for how surprisingly dark Love Stuff is. The album is gritty and moody, leaning into blues and a really cool southern gothic aesthetic that I'd describe as "a witch in the old west.". Elle has a fantastic voice that’s really evocative, able to bring both unbridled joy and intense yearning. Backed by heavy guitars and drums she paints a picture of a harsh and desolate world, which she responds to in equal parts with ferocity and pathos. In a lot of ways she follows the Lana Del Rey moody pop girl blueprint in how she toys with American iconography and the ways women cope and survive in this world, except with country guitars and fiery belts.
Positives: Great vocals, gothic aesthetic, strong collection of songs
Potential Barriers: This kind of country isn’t for everyone, maybe a few too many blues tunes
Sample Track: “Ain’t Gonna Drown” is an eerie, surprisingly haunting track.

Mickey Guyton by Mickey Guyton (Country)

  • For Fans Of: Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Hallmark movies
Description: There’s just four songs on here, but each of them fires off at full capacity. It’s pleasantly old-school country, which in a strange way makes it feel really fresh. There’s still a pop sensibility in the huge melodies/vocals, but the somewhat twangy arrangements call to mind country music at its very best. Mickey has a huge, expressive voice and her stellar performances on these songs are a major part of why they work so well. The songs are all about moving on from an ex-boyfriend and she belts it out with such fire that you have to root for her. There’s not much to say about it really, it’s just four great country bops. We’re still waiting for the followup!
Positives: Quick listen, accessible country songs, fun and catchy
Potential Barriers: It’s short, she might oversing at times
Sample Track: “Better Than You Left Me” broke the record for “the highest one-week add total of a country artist’s debut single in Country Aircheck history.”

Zanaka by Jain (World-Pop)

  • For Fans Of: Stromae, Shakira, the sun
Description: Though she’s French Jain spent much of her youth in Africa and the Middle East, marinating in the music and culture. The album wears these influences on its sleeve, but rather than simple imitation sounds and styles melt together and blend into something that feels fresh and exciting. There’s also traces of funk, reggae, and dance pop here, giving this album an even broader appeal and pretty unique sound that nobody else in the mainstream is quite doing, based in heavy percussion/beats with world music influences layered on top. Her distinctive accent and quirky lyrical style give this album a campy–but delightful–feeing. But most importantly this album is rich and warm, like listening to sunlight. Everything here, from the sound to the lyrics to the visuals, indicates that Jain thinks we live in a beautiful world and we should all appreciate it and love each other. And she makes it so damn good you can’t help but agree.
Positives: Brimming with energy, fresh and different
Potential Barriers: The album can get a little samey
Sample Track: “Makeba” is a massive bop with an amazing (Grammy nominated) music video.

Astrodreams by Polartropica (Dream-Pop)

  • For Fans Of: Oh Wonder, GFRIEND, Sailor Moon
Description: Polartropica are unknown but delightful. They claim their goal is to take their listeners to another, more magical world, and while your mileage may vary on that front they definitely serve up s fun electropop experience. Their whimsical viewpoint influences the sound of this album, which is very dreamy and leans into a spacey, aesthetic; it sort of sounds like the soundtrack to an adventure you might have dreamed up as a kid. There solid melodies and some great synths that add some kick, and I love the lead singer’s voice. There’s a solid message beneath all the style too, with the songs exploring themes of confronting and overcoming your past. The songs manage to feel strange and familiar at the same time, drawing from recognizable references but emerging as unique entities well worth the 15 minute runtime.
Positives: Short and sweet, cute energy
Potential Barriers: Might be too frothy for some
Sample Track: “Light Up The Sky” could be an anime theme song.

Catharsis by Jake Zyrus (Pop-Rock)

  • For Fans Of: Avril Lavigne, male rock stars whose names I don’t know so I can’t list them
Description: “Catharsis” describes the purgation of emotions, essentially the experience of “letting it all out” so you can grow and move on; it’s fitting then that this was the title for Jake Zyrus’s final album under the stage name Charice before publicly transitioning. There’s something of a loose concept to this album thematically, tracking the journey of a relationship that begins happy then grows painful until he comes out the other side happy and free. The album itself seems to transition as it goes along from the cheerful pop sound sung in light soprano that defined his early works into songs with a grittier rock sound sung with huskier vocals, transforming him for an album into a full fledged rock star pouring his soul out over wailing guitars. It’s a role he pulls off well, and it’s really cool to hear a pop star pull off an act like this so convincingly.
Positives: It’s that angsty pop-rock sound we all love
Potential Barriers: The writing can be amateurish, this was released before he transitioned so that might be a bit weird
Sample Track: “Killing Myself To Sleep” is a sprawling Nirvana influenced rock jam.

Disappear Here by Bad Suns (Alt-Rock)

  • For Fans Of: Walk The Moon, Misterwives, mildly successful but not quite mainstream indie bands
Description: This album feels fresh and exciting like the old glory days of the mid 2010s indie boom. While they didn’t have any towering hits Bad Suns emerged and saw some success during this period, and while it very much sounds like this era there’s a hint of some old school in there as well. It’s uptempo, sunny, slightly-synth/slightly-punk/really-pop alternative rock, with massive appeal and some real crowdpleaser songs. Bad Suns have a knack for catchy melodies and hot guitar licks, and they come up with memorable lyrics/song titles as well. This is the kind of album you blast while you’re riding down the coast with the top down, and if you can’t do that, it’ll help you feel like you’re there.
Positives: Fun, catchy, very bright energy
Potential Barriers: It’s got guitars and men
Sample Track: “Off She Goes” is super smooth and has some great guitar work

Leo Rising by Karmin (Pop)

  • For Fan Of: Katy Perry, Natalia Kills, impossibly pretty people
Description: Karmin were signed to a major label for a bit but left it when they realized that they weren’t being allowed to make the kind of music that they wanted (and because their album flopped but w/e) and since the first album they dropped after going independent was this good, it’s hard to fault them for their decision. They were allowed to flex their skills to the fullest and the result is a diverse album full of quality songs that touch on basically every genre you can think of. There’s touches of bubblegum, synthpop, hip-hop, rap, even vaudeville on here, and it’s all cohesive and interesting to listen to. The huge melodies, fun production, and agile vocals that made songs like “Brokenhearted” a hit are still there but they’re presented with a new maturity that keeps them from becoming grating. Each song on the album is loosely based on an astrological sign, a fun little gimmick that lets them explore a range of topics and moods.
Positives: A super solid straight-up-pop album, consistent from start to finish
Potential Barriers: Variety of styles means you might like some tracks more than others, white rap
Sample Track: “Easy Money” is my favorite.

WE ARE KING by (We Are) King (R&B + Dream-Pop)

  • For Fans Of: Blood Orange, Solange, opening your mind and feeling one with the universe
Description: We Are King belong to that special class of perfectionist auteurs who only drop music once in a blue moon but nobody cares because it’s always incredible. This is their only album and if they never released another they’d still be legends, peep the “Accolades” section for this album on Wikipedia. Their harmonies are literally heavenly, they sound like a choir of angels, and the dreamy music billows around them like clouds. The songs are a bit slow but that’s an asset: rather than immediate gratification they hit you with slow burns that take you on a journey. They gently guide us through stories about love and discovery that take us to another, softer world. This is the kind of album that can always calm you down and make your day a little bit better.
Positives: Lush sonics, amazing harmonies, gorgeous vibes
Potential Barriers: The songs are slow and long
Sample Tracks: “Hey” is the longest song on the album but it’s perfect.

The Cloud Dream Of The Nine by Uhm Jung Hwa (Dance-Pop)

  • For Fans Of: Madonna, Robyn, pop divas with huge legacies
Description: Having debuted in 1993, almost literally at the start of the Kpop industry, Uhm Jung Hwa dominated the scene in the ’90s/‘00s and established herself as the industry’s original “sexy girl.” She’s a legend, and her comeback album (released after almost a decade away from music) is an album befitting a legend. Based in disco/techno sounds, although it toys with a throwback sound it’s a very forward thinking album. It has an icy, almost cyberpunk sound that weaves together crisp percussion and intricate synth work with her cooly detached vocals that sound mature and regal. The whole project just feels tight and focused, oozing in charisma and confidence that these eager to please youngsters can only dream of projecting. A shot of star power from one of Kpop's truest legacy acts.
Positives: Short, legendary artist, crisp dance pop
Potential Barriers: It’s in Korean, a little different than the usual Kpop
Sample Track: “Ending Credit” is my favorite song, a mid tempo synth slow burn with a stunning music video.

Communicating by Hundred Waters (Indie + Electronic)

  • For Fans Of: Chairlift/Caroline Polachek, Be The Cowboy, #mood
Description: Hundred Waters aren’t exactly huge but they have made a small name for themselves in the music scene thanks to their somewhat quiet, thoughtful indie music, and with this record they pepper in some ever enticing pop influences to create captivating songs. Their music is like a duck paddling on water: smooth and calm on the surface, but a storm of activity beneath. Listen for the sonic tapestries they create if nothing else; the songs here feel somehow sparse and lush at the same time, every element blending together as if we’re listening to pure music rather than a collection of instruments. It’s soothing while still being engaging, which is fitting because much of the album is devoted to reflecting on love and loneliness. An album to lie in bed and listen to while staring at the ceiling.
Positives: Wonderful to listen to, engaging without being overwhelming
Potential Barriers: Songs can get a little samey
Sample Track: “Wave To Anchor” is a transcendent work of swirling synths and vocals, I’m still shocked it wasn’t a hit.

Rush by RIRI (Bubblegum)

  • For Fans Of: Yours Truly by Ariana Grande, the wave of blonde pop stars in the ’90s
Description: This is old school bubblegum, without a hint of irony to it. RIRI’s music is so bright and fun; the references and inspirations are very obvious but they’re made to sound so good they feel fresh all over again. Like, watch this clip of her dancing and tell me you don’t see at least a little bit of classic pop star in her. She has a great voice and she uses it to the fullest, if you’ve been missing huge pop choruses and dramatic ballads she has some for you.
Positives: Short, feel good music, tons of great pop music energy
Potential Barriers: Large parts of her songs are in Japanese, it’s not groundbreaking, kinda loud
Sample Track: “Rush” is a colossal pop song with an amazing chorus.

Tears On The Dance Floor by Steps (Dance-Pop)

  • For Fans Of: Kylie Minogue, Scissor Sisters, standing on top of a mountain in a fabulous gown as the wind blows
Description: Steps are a UK co-ed teen pop group who were HUGE around the turn of the millennium and after the usual messy breakup and middling solo careers they managed to actually have a proper reunion and start releasing albums almost a decade after breaking up. They make the jump from teen pop to adult(?) pop with surprising dignity, managing to bring maturity to their original sound without losing too much of its danceable appeal. It’s still just as cheesy, but in a more grown up kind of way. The chipper Y2K production is traded out for an orchestral disco sound that has more of a “club” vibe to it; the lyrics are melodramatic, but they belt them out with such conviction and the arrangements are so theatrical that it just works. Like the title implies it’s a lot of romantic songs, with huge beats and choruses that match the huge emotions they’re singing about.
Positives: Unapologetically big pop, nostalgia factor, danceable
Potential Barriers: Melodramatic, might get repetitive
Sample Track: “Scared Of The Dark” is dramatic in the best way possible.

Woman Titles by Hot Dad (’80s Synthpop)

  • For Fans Of: Weird Al Yankovich, Bleachers, ’80s movies without the problematic stuff
Description: Hot Dad is a comedy YouTuber who mostly makes joke music (you might recognize this video), but that doesn’t mean he’s lacking in musical talent. For this album he sets his sights on parodying the melodramatic try-hard pop of the ‘80s, and what results is a collection of surprisingly touching songs that slap harder than you’d expect. This album aggressively respects women, and while it’s played for comedic effect there is something sweet about the earnestness of it; this level of sincerity is so powerful it has to be filtered through a lens of irony. It helps that the synth-drenched production is genuinely fantastic, offering up some of the hard hitting synth-rock that would make the era proud. It really adds gravity to the lyrics, making things like “sharing a meal” and “having your parents meet” sound truly epic.
Positives: Hardcore ‘80s vibes, smart songwriting
Potential Barriers: Potentially obnoxious vocals/lyrics
Sample Track: “Girl Touch” is a swirling dance tune about the magic of… bumping a girl’s hand.

A Bnny Nghtmr II by Bnny Rbbt (Horror Pop)

  • For Fans Of: Lemon Demon, Halloween (as in, the holiday), eccentric high concept artists
Description: This album is a haunted house: “spooky” and grimy, but in such a plastic, campy way that’s kind of charming. It’s pop music viewed through the filter of funhouse mirrors, with genres being warped and twisted into unnatural forms. There’s a steadfast commitment to a horror movie aesthetic with broken down sounding instruments and dark themes, but the songs beneath the style are always listenable and memorable. The Bnny Rbbt character has a distinct voice characterized by inhuman growls and angelic (autotuned) falsetto, which is in some ways grating but in a lot of ways mesmerizing. It’s an “ugly-pretty” album of contradictions but the end result is a very unique project, and a possible Halloween classic. (Side note: It’s also a visual album, with an elaborate alternate reality game attached, if that’s your thing.)
Positives: An interesting aesthetic, spooky, songs can be addictive
Potential Barriers: The weirdness can be off-putting, polarizing vocals, might take a few listens to appreciate
Sample Track: “Guillotine” is subtly catchy and showcases many of the album's "gimmicks"

Coloured by Priscilla Renea (Country + R&B)

  • For Fans Of: Kacey Musgraves, Lil Nas X, modern historical dramas about black women
Description: You’ve definitely heard Priscilla Renea’s work before because she’s a prolific songwriter who’s worked with just about everybody, but she’s an amazing singer in her own right who’s dropped some far too underrated solo music. She’s spent years writing hits for pop/r&b artists, but unexpectedly it’s her country roots that most inform this album. She captures the storytelling spirit of country music on many of the songs with talk of boots, denim, and broken families abound. A rootsy country twang blends with modern sounding trap and 808s, and she brings further influences into the mix depending on the track. It’s a boldly genre blending album that preaches messages of acceptance, at times romantic and at times political.
Positives: Very fresh, good for country fans and pop fans, great vocals
Potential Barriers: Slower songs might drag
Sample Track: “Jonjo” is a funny little song that shows off her country/trap sound.

The Much Much How How And I by Cosmo Sheldrake (Folktronica + Indie-Folk)

  • For Fans Of: Surfjan Stevens, Hozier, Disney’s Fantasia movies
Description: Remember that one episode of SpongeBob where SpongeBob had to lure the jellyfish out of his house and back into the fields by playing a tune with just Gary’s eyeballs, and then the sounds of nature combined to make a song? That’s the best way I can describe what’s happening here on this album. The production on this album seems to have a life of its own, it bubbles up naturally as the songs wear on almost like it’s playing with us. There’s a quirky sound palate that sounds carnivalesque, but also medieval, but also somewhat electronic? It’s always boldly cinematic though, constantly evoking something even if you aren’t sure what it is. With his earthy voice he sings us folksy tales as if we’re kids around his campfire, giving the songs a solid indie-pop backbone underneath all of the pizazz. This is a wholly unique album that doesn’t quite sound like anyone else on the scene.
Positives: It’s different, colorful, songs are surprisingly catchy
Potential Barriers: It’s weird, might be too far from pop music
Sample Track: “Wriggle” shows off quirky sound of the album.

Seen It All by Shea Diamond (Soul + Blues)

  • For Fans Of: Alabama Shakes, Tina Turner, strutting down hallways
Description: With her unique voice and powerful songwriting Shea Diamond feels like a breath of fresh air. This EP is a scant five tracks but each one of them sounds like a hit! Offering up blues tinged songs about her experiences as a black trans woman in America, she brings a sound and perspective that’s sorely lacking in the mainstream pop scene. Her music is unapologetically sexual and political, but still bright and upbeat, which makes for a very interesting combination. There’s a foot stomping energy to her music that makes the songs feel anthemic, fully living up to the straightforward strength of her lyrics. Her voice is rich and gritty but has a warm tone, and her somewhat unpolished vocals are really fun to listen to over wailing guitars and slamming percussion. Her music brings light out in dark times, and it’s catchy to boot.
Positives: Strong vocals and songwriting
Potential Barriers: Political themes
Sample Track: She was signed after Justin Tranter heard her sing “I Am Her” at a rally.

2020.02.02 21:12 nathanweis Need help with finding Ancestor in Tennessee

First, I'll start with everything I know about this ancestor. His name was Thomas Franklin Singleton, born 13 Feb, 1870, Murfreesboro, TN. He moved and lived in Arkansas were he died on 24 Aug, 1947. I can very easily track him and his family in Arkansas, but I cannot find his parents. It was family lore/story that he was orphaned at a very young age because his father and mother died within years of each other when he was very very young. However, despite my research into TN, and more specifically Murfreesboro's Birth records, I can't seem to find anything. My theory is, he probably lost both parents before the 1870 census could be recorded?
There are a few rumostories that his family (parents, grandparents, etc) were wealthy, and that later in his life he received a letter from someone, with money, or something. Apparently he responded by sending the letter back and saying he didn't need their help. Another story has more evidence, is he lived with his cousin(or aunt) in TN. There is a census to prove this. The earliest census I can find with him in it dates to 1880 with him living with the Brinkley's listed as a boarder. It has been said that the wife of John Brinkley, Elizabeth J Ratliff (b. 1842), was his cousin, or somehow a relative. However, in the census like I said it lists him as a boarder, however, in the same census, there is another family that has a nephew listed, so I would assume he would have been listed the same or similarly, unless this was his foster family?
We do know both of his parents were born in TN, because on many census's it says so. But again, I can't find anything.

Any help with this would be amazing. This is sort of a last effort, and don't expect anything.

2020.01.01 19:24 NotBlarg Game Grumps 2019 Summary Part 1

This post is designed to look at everything the Game Grumps have done in the past year. Both positive and negative. Everything on this list caused a stir in the Game Grumps community. I have multiple sources and if it was a talking point in two or more of those, then it was added to the list. Anything else I deemed irrelevent/nitpicky and thus ignored. I found last year's post a bit too opinionated, so I've decided to stick to the facts and remove my personal opinion, though some might have slipped through the cracks.

To fit everything on here, a brief summary has been made, but understand that context is important, and to get all the details, check the source material. Essentially, I will give you the information, but it's up to you to interpret it. To help you, links and/or timestamps have been provided for most things on the list, (I decided to add them a couple months in, but I got lazy and didn't want to dig through several months of videos to find links for things I already wrote) and I've double checked all of them to make sure they work.

Due to the amount of things that happened this year, this list had to be split into two parts. You are currently reading part one which covers the first half of the year. Part two covers the rest of the year plus some miscellaneous stats. A link to part two can be found at the bottom the summary, as well as right here.

Other than that, happy reading.

2019.10.05 05:53 Wolfy_Fatal This isnt fun anymore, This isnt fun anymore, This isnt fun anymore...

State Carnivals are the most fun a person could have in one night, despite the over crowding and over priced food and scam games, its all fun to most and certainly here in Tennessee you see alot of those types of carnivals. I myself hate them after an early October carnival, 3 years ago today is when i lost my mind, my body and my sub conscious well being. I was never a get together type person in highschool, always stuck to myself and had a small group of what i called friends. had good grades, high expectations were expected of me.
It was a nice fall day maybe 60 degrees fahrenheit your typical fall day not to shabby to say the least. I was invited to the state carnival with my friends Jessie, Daniel and Carissa. They wanted to have some sort of 2 on 2 date night, I was with Jessie most of the time while Daniel had Carissa since they were dating i didnt expect much different in the pairings but it was still going to be fun i hoped.
We lived in Dickson TN, and we had to make it to Franklin to attend the state carnival so it was abit of a drive, but it wasnt to bad. I was the only other friend in our group that owned a car aside from Daniel but i offered and we all hoped in after meeting up at my house, Carissa smoked a cigarette while we waited for Jessie to find her phone, typical. Once we were all saddled up and ready for the drive ahead. We headed out. The drive went smoothly hit abit of traffic here and there but nothing out of the ordinary.
We get to the carnival dirt lot and find a spot and head to front gates, Daniel ordered tickets for him and Carissa ahead of time, so i had to buy tickets at the door not a big deal since we were gonna meet back at the entrance at around 11PM. It was currently 4:15PM so we had alot of time to kill. Daniel and Carissa skipped off into the crowd while Jessie and I decided what we wanted to do, all the ride and food lines were long so we decided to find some cheapskate games to play wasted a few bucks. We found a knock the bottles over game that gave decent prizes. I spent 10 bucks to get Jessie this Lion she was eyeing, i ended up getting it since i was a star pitcher for our high school at one point.
About and hour passes and we meet up with Daniel and Carissa in the rodeo arena to get some food and watch the bull riders. There mustve been something wrong with that funnel cake that we ate since we all felt abit woozy after we ate the giant serving size that it was. Maybe we ate to much, we all shrugged it off to the best of our ability drinking water to ease our stomachs. After the bullfights were over we split off again, it was about 7 at this time, still plenty of time to kill, all the younger kids and parents headed out so the lines for the rides were shorter.
Jessie and I rode rides for a good hour and a half before she wanted to go to the house of wacky mirrors. We enter and its some sort of maze type mirror house, we navigate what feels for like hours. My phone died earlier so i couldn't check the time, I asked Jessie if she could check the time and hers was dead aswell. "Shit" i thought to myself. So we started back tracking big mistake on our part. We got lost even more that we did before. "Jessie where the hell is the exit?" I ask nervously " I dont know... James" A worried expression spreading over both of our faces.
The next instant i remember is Jessie screaming and pointing behind me, a clown... i hated clowns and i think she did to by the sound of it, I turn around to see yes a clown just standing there not moving but heavily breathing with a rubber horn in its hand. I back Jessie up a few feet with her clutching the Lion i got earlier for her. There was something... iffy about this what seemed at first glance a normal clown, nothing crazy out of this world but its eyes... were bleeding. We stepped back slowly and it started honking the horn, Honk. Honk, Honk Honk. Honk. 1, 3, 1, 3 over and over and then it started laughing. we had to get out of here i thought and grabbed her hand and started hastily going the other way, but it was no use, it seemed the way we came from is no where to be found. 4 way splits all over the place and we had no idea where to go. The clown was pursuing us and it appeared right infront of us like some teleportation magic. Jessie screamed and ran down one of the mirrored corridors and i tried to chase her down and find her but shes just... gone.
She just vanished into thin air but i can still hear her screams, i tried to follow through out the endless mirrored corridors with no luck and then her screaming stopped and the honking of the horn started again. Except it was now headed straight for me, I ran as fast as i could the other way but to no avail, the walls seemed to be getting closer and closer the further i went on the honking not getting any quieter, I kept going with a glimmer of hope i could escape this hell i was in.
I went around a corner, dead end. I turned around to try and find another way. Its blocked im in a mirrored box with no escape. I pounded on the glass hoping to somehow break it, nothing, as the horn and the clowns laughing became louder and lounder i could do anything, i just sat against one of the walls and yelled. THIS ISNT FUN ANYMORE, THIS ISNT FUN ANYMORE, THIS ISNT FUN ANYMORE, over and over till the last thing i remember are those words. And everything faded to black.
I woke up after who knows how long. In the hospital. with no recall of what happened after i blacked out. I never heard from Jessie or Daniel or even Carissa again, they were just gone... like nothing or like they ever existed.

President Lyndon Baines Johnson was secretly Jewish, because his mother Rebekah Baines & his grandmother Ruth Huffman were Jewish. "According to Jewish law, if a person’s mother is Jewish, then that person is automatically Jewish, regardless of the father’s ethnicity or religion. The facts indicate that both of Lyndon Johnson’s great-grandparents, on the maternal side, were Jewish." --

So is Hillary, and Trump, as their AIPAC speeches showed quite clearly." --
The UK's House of Windsor, actually German Saxe-Coburg & Gotha, may be secretly Jewish. "In this paper we will review the matter of the Davidic lineages and their place in the British Royal Family. This paper is concerned with the lineage from the biblical Zorobabel or Zerubbabel through the Exilarchs, down to the Houses of Hanover and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and from there into the House of Windsor and the British Monarchs from George III. It will be seen that Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of England and the Commonwealth, is the direct lineal descendant of David the son of Jesse, King of Israel, in the acknowledged royal line." --
"The House Of Saud: It’s Jewish Origin And Installation By The British Crown The two exposés posted below in their entirety provide essential material regarding the true origin of the House of Saud, as well as vital background about the current monarchy ruling Saudi Arabia. It is virtually impossible to understand the true nature of the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the USA, and between Saudi Arabia and Israel, without the historical information that follows...2002 IRAQI INTEL REPORTED WAHHABIS ARE OF JEWISH ORIGIN by David Livingstone...The U.S. Department of Defense has released translations of a number of Iraqi intelligence documents dating from Saddam’s rule. One, a General Military Intelligence Directorate report from September 2002, entitled “The Emergence of Wahhabism and its Historical Roots”, shows the Iraqi government was aware of the nefarious purposes of the Wahhabis of Saudi Arabia, often known as Salafis, in serving Western interests to undermine Islam. The report relies heavily on the Memoirs of Mr. Hempher, which describe in detail how a British spy to the Middle East, in the middle of the eighteenth century, made contact with Adbul Wahhab, to create a subversive version of Islam, the notorious sect of Wahhabism, which became the founding cult of the Saudi regime. The movement was temporarily suppressed by the Ottomam armies in the middle of the nineteenth century. But with the assistance of the British, the Wahhabis and their Saudi sponsors returned to power and founded their own state in 1932. Since then, the Saudis have collaborated closely with the Americans, to whom they owe their tremendous oil wealth, in funding various Islamic fundamentalist organizations and other American covert operations, particularly the “jihad” in Afghanistan. But the Saudis simultaneously use the immense wealth at their disposal to disseminate this disruptive brand of Islam to various parts of the world, categorized by some of the largest propaganda campaign in history. Many who defend Wahhabism as a legitimate reform movement of Islam have tried to dismiss the Memoirs as a spurious fabrication. These include Bernard Haykel, Professor in Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University, who, without providing any evidence, presumes the Memoirs to have been created by Ayyub Sabri Pasha. However, while the Memoirs only emerged in the 1970s, Pasha wrote his version of the story already in 1888. Ayyub Sabri Pasha was a well-known Ottoman writer and Turkish naval admiral, who served the Ottoman army in the Arabian Peninsula, writing several works about the region and its history. Including The Beginning and Spreading of Wahhabism, where he recounts Abdul Wahhab’s association and plotting with Hempher. In addition to that revealed in the Hempher Memoirs, the Iraqi intelligence report also makes known some surprising claims, derived from works circulated in Arabic which have not been translated into English. As the report recounts, both Abdul Wahhab, and his sponsor, ibn Saud, who founded the Saudi dynasty, were of Jewish origin. For example, D. Mustafa Turan wrote, in The Donmeh Jews, that Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab was a descendant of a family of Donmeh Jews from Turkey. The Donmeh were descendants of followers of the infamous false-messiah of Judaism, Shabbetai Zevi, who shocked the Jewish world in 1666 by converting to Islam. Viewing it as a sacred mystery, Zevi’s followers imitated his conversion to Islam, though secretly keeping to their Kabbalistic doctrines. In Europe, the Shabbeteans were eventually led a century later by Jacob Frank, claiming to be a reincarnation of Zevi. And, according to Rabbi Antelman in To Eliminate the Opiate, to them belonged the Rothschilds who had a hand in the founding of the Bavarian Illuminati. The Donmeh community of Turkey were concentrated in the city of Salonika, which became a hotbed of Masonic activity, and from which the Young Turk movement evolved, which aided in the collapse of the Muslim empire of the Ottoman Turks. There is evidence that Ataturk himself, the founder of the modern Turkish state, was of Donmeh origin as well. Turan maintains that Abdul Wahhab’s grandfather, Sulayman was actually Shulman, having belonged to the Jewish community of Bursa in Turkey. From there he settled in Damascus, where he feigned Islam, but was apparently expelled for practicing sorcery. He then fled to Egypt and he again faced condemnation, so made his way he to the Hijaz, where he got married and fathered Abdul Wahhab. According to the report, the same is claimed in The Donmeh Jews and the Origin of the Saudi Wahabis, Rifat Salim Kabar. The notion of the Saudi family being of Jewish heritage has been published by Mohammad Sakher, who, it is claimed, was ordered killed by the regime for his revelations. The report relates a similar account, but from different sources. According The Wahabi Movement/The Truth and Roots, by Abdul Wahhab Ibrahim Al-Shammari, for example, ibn Saud is actually descended from Mordechai bin Ibrahim bin Mushi, a Jewish merchant from Basra. Apparently, when he was approached by members from the Arabian tribe of Aniza, then claimed to be one of them, and traveled with them to Najd and his name became Markhan bin Ibrahim bin Musa. Additionally, Abdul Wahhab was descended from Wahib Al-Tamimi, so, as reported by al Said Nasir, in The History of the Saud Family, the Saudi ambassador in Cairo, Abdullah bin Ibrahim al Mufaddal, paid Muhammad Al-Tamimi thirty-five thousand Jinee in the year 1943, to forge a family tree of the Saudi family and that of Abdul Wahhab, and merge them into one, claiming their origin from the Prophet Mohammed. While it would be difficult to independently authenticate these claims, they are interesting in light of the role that the state of Saudi Arabia has and continues to play with regards to supporting and advancing Western power in the Middle East and elsewhere. Especially astounding is the very dubious and virulent form of Islam, that Wahhabism and Salafism represent, which is currently wrecking havoc on Islamic traditions, and dividing the Muslim community in petty squabbles over trivial details, allowing the War on Islam to proceed effectively unchecked. Attachment from the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) titled: “The Emergence of AI-Wahhabiyyah Movement and its Historical Roots” & The Saudi Royal Family Are Crypto-Jews By Abdulaziz Saud THE SAUDI DYNASTY: FROM WHERE IS IT? AND WHO IS THE REAL ANCESTOR OF THIS FAMILY?RESEARCH AND PRESENTATION OF: MOHAMMAD SAKHER , who was ordered killed by the Saudi Regime for the following findings: 1. Are the Saudi Family members belonging to the Tribe of ANZA BEN WA’EL as they allege to be? 2. Is Islam their actual religion? 3. Are they of an ARAB ORIGIN at all?" --
Adolf Hitler may have been secretly Jewish. "In the decades since Adolf Hitler’s death, the Nazi leader’s ancestry has been a subject of rampant speculation and intense controversy. Some have suggested that his father, Alois, born to an unwed woman named Maria Schickelgruber, was the illegitimate child of Leopold Frankenberger, a young Jewish man whose family employed her as a maid. (She subsequently married Johann Georg Hiedler–later spelled “Hitler”–whose surname her son adopted.) Others have claimed that Alois’ biological father was also the grandfather of Hitler’s mother, Klara Pözl, making Adolf the product of an incestuous marriage. To unravel the mystery of the Fuhrer’s roots, the Belgian journalist Jean-Paul Mulders teamed up with Marc Vermeeren, a historian who has written extensively about Hitler and his ancestors. The duo collected saliva samples from 39 of the infamous dictator’s living relatives, including a great-nephew, Alexander Stuart-Houston, who lives in New York, and an Austrian cousin identified only as “Norbert H.” Tests were then conducted to reveal the samples’ principal haplogroups, which are sets of chromosomes that geneticists use to define specific populations. Writing in the Flemish-language magazine Knack, Mulders reported that the relatives’ most dominant haplogroup, known as E1b1b, is rare in Western Europeans but common among North Africans, and particularly the Berber tribes of Morocco, Algeria, Libya and Tunisia. It is also one of the major founding lineages of the Jewish population, present in 18 to 20 percent of Ashkenazi Jews and 8.6 to 30 percent of Sephardic Jews. In other words, Hitler’s family tree may have included Jewish and African ancestors. The tragic irony of the discovery, of course, is that Hitler’s Nazi regime systematically wiped out an estimated two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population between 1933 and 1945. People of African descent were also considered enemies of the Aryans, whose supposed racial purity and superiority were central to the “Mein Kampf” author’s lethal rhetoric. As Mulders put it in the Knack article, “One can from this postulate that Hitler was related to people whom he despised.” As part of its continuing quest to pin down the Fuhrer’s heritage, Knack hopes to conduct DNA tests on a jawbone fragment and piece of bloodstained cloth retrieved from the Berlin bunker where Hitler allegedly committed suicide. The Russian government has held these artifacts in its archives since 1948 and continues to vouch for their authenticity despite a contradictory 2009 study by American scientists. Since the publication of the Knack article on August 18, 2010, academics have been quick to point out that this does not necessarily mean the man who inspired the Holocaust was either Jewish, African or a combination of the two. The E1b1b haplogroup runs in other ethnic groups, for instance, and DNA analysis remains an inexact science. But one thing about this study’s results is certain, as Ronny Decorte, a geneticist interviewed by Knack, remarked: “Hitler would not have been pleased.”" --
German Prime Minister Angela Merkel may be secretly Jewish. "“Angela Merkel has clearly been a real anchor for German Jewish relations,” Deidre Berger, head of the American Jewish Committee’s Berlin office, told JTA. “She has an inner bond to Israel that is quite remarkable. And despite occasional political disagreements, she has brought German-Israeli relations to a new height.”" -- "Her real name is Rebbekah Dorothea Kasner. She wants to start WW3 with Russia so the Jews can destroy Western Civilization and rule the planet over the remaining slaves of the southern hemisphere. ""Who is a Jew?" is a basic question about Jewish identity and considerations of Jewish self-identification. The question explores ideas about Jewish personhood, which have cultural, ethnic, religious, political, genealogical, and personal dimensions. Orthodox Judaism and Conservative Judaism follow Jewish law, deeming a person to be Jewish if their mother is Jewish or they underwent a halakhic conversion. Reform Judaism and Reconstructionist Judaism accept both matrilineal and patrilineal descent. Karaite Judaism predominantly follows patrilineal descent." -- Wikipedia
"Madeleine Albright, John Kerry, Wolf Blitzer, Rachel Maddow, all Jews" --
"Who Is a Jew? Level: Basic *In the Bible, Jews were called Hebrews or Children of Israel *The terms "Jew" and "Judaism" come from the tribe or kingdom of Judah *"Jew" now refers to all physical and spiritual descendants of Jacob *A person can be Jewish by birth or by conversion *Traditionally, Jewish status passes through the mother, not the father Origins of the Words "Jew" and "Judaism" The original name for the people we now call Jews was Hebrews. The word "Hebrew" (in Hebrew, "Ivri") is first used in the Torah to describe Abraham (Gen. 14:13). The word is apparently derived from the name Eber, one of Abraham's ancestors. Another tradition teaches that the word comes from the word "eyver," which means "the other side," referring to the fact that Abraham came from the other side of the Euphrates, or referring to the fact Abraham was separated from the other nations morally and spiritually. Another name used for the people is Children of Israel or Israelites, which refers to the fact that the people are descendants of Jacob, who was also called Israel. The word "Jew" (in Hebrew, "Yehudi") is derived from the name Judah, which was the name of one of Jacob's twelve sons. Judah was the ancestor of one of the tribes of Israel, which was named after him. Likewise, the word Judaism literally means "Judah-ism," that is, the religion of the Yehudim. Other sources, however, say that the word "Yehudim" means "People of G-d," because the first three letters of "Yehudah" are the same as the first three letters of G-d's four-letter name. Originally, the term Yehudi referred specifically to members of the tribe of Judah, as distinguished from the other tribes of Israel. However, after the death of King Solomon, the nation of Israel was split into two kingdoms: the kingdom of Judah and the kingdom of Israel (I Kings 12; II Chronicles 10). After that time, the word Yehudi could properly be used to describe anyone from the kingdom of Judah, which included the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and Levi, as well as scattered settlements from other tribes. The most obvious biblical example of this usage is in Esther 2:5, where Mordecai is referred to as both a Yehudi and a member of the tribe of Benjamin. In the 6th century B.C.E., the kingdom of Israel was conquered by Assyria and the ten tribes were exiled from the land (II Kings 17), leaving only the tribes in the kingdom of Judah remaining to carry on Abraham's heritage. These people of the kingdom of Judah were generally known to themselves and to other nations as Yehudim (Jews), and that name continues to be used today. In common speech, the word "Jew" is used to refer to all of the physical and spiritual descendants of Jacob/Israel, as well as to the patriarchs Abraham and Isaac and their wives, and the word "Judaism" is used to refer to their beliefs. Technically, this usage is inaccurate, just as it is technically inaccurate to use the word "Indian" to refer to the original inhabitants of the Americas. However, this technically inaccurate usage is common both within the Jewish community and outside of it, and is therefore used throughout this site. Who is a Jew? A Jew is any person whose mother was a Jew or any person who has gone through the formal process of conversion to Judaism. It is important to note that being a Jew has nothing to do with what you believe or what you do. A person born to non-Jewish parents who has not undergone the formal process of conversion but who believes everything that Orthodox Jews believe and observes every law and custom of Judaism is still a non-Jew, even in the eyes of the most liberal movements of Judaism, and a person born to a Jewish mother who is an atheist and never practices the Jewish religion is still a Jew, even in the eyes of the ultra-Orthodox. In this sense, Judaism is more like a nationality than like other religions, and being Jewish is like a citizenship. See What Is Judaism? This has been established since the earliest days of Judaism. In the Torah, you will see many references to "the strangers who dwell among you" or "righteous proselytes" or "righteous strangers." These are various classifications of non-Jews who lived among Jews, adopting some or all of the beliefs and practices of Judaism without going through the formal process of conversion and becoming Jews. Once a person has converted to Judaism, he is not referred to by any special term; he is as much a Jew as anyone born Jewish. Although all Jewish movements agree on these general principles, there are occasional disputes as to whether a particular individual is a Jew. Most of these disputes fall into one of two categories. First, traditional Judaism maintains that a person is a Jew if his mother is a Jew, regardless of who his father is. The liberal movements, on the other hand, allow Jewish status to pass through the mother or the father if the child identifies as Jewish. For example, former Phillies catcher Mike Lieberthal, who had a Jewish father but chooses not to be identified as Jewish, would not be Jewish according to the Reform movement, but former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who had a Jewish father and adopted a Jewish identity as an adult, would be considered Jewish. See their position here). On the other hand, the child of a a Christian father and a Jewish mother who does not publicly identify himself as Jewish would be considered Jewish according to the Orthodox movement, but not according to the Reform movement. Actor Harrison Ford would fit into this category: his mother's parents were Jewish, but he does not particularly consider himself to be of any religion, but the Orthodox would count him toward a minyan if he showed up for services. The matter becomes even more complicated, because the status of that interfaith child's children also comes into question. Second, the more traditional movements do not always acknowledge the validity of conversions by the more liberal movements. A more liberal movement might not follow the procedures required by the more traditional movement, thereby invalidating the conversion. For example, Orthodoxy requires acceptance of the yoke of Torah (observance of Jewish law as Orthodoxy understands it), while other movements would not teach the same laws that Orthodoxy does and might not require observance. The Conservative movement requires circumcision and immersion in a mikvah, which is not always required in Reform conversions. About Matrilineal Descent Many people have asked me why traditional Judaism uses matrilineal descent to determine Jewish status, when in all other things (tribal affiliation, priestly status, royalty, etc.) we use patrilineal descent. The Torah does not specifically state anywhere that matrilineal descent should be used; however, there are several passages in the Torah where it is understood that the child of a Jewish woman and a non-Jewish man is a Jew, and several other passages where it is understood that the child of a non-Jewish woman and a Jewish man is not a Jew. In Deuteronomy 7:1-5, in expressing the prohibition against intermarriage, G-d says "he [i.e., the non-Jewish male spouse] will cause your child to turn away from Me and they will worship the gods of others." No such concern is expressed about the child of a non-Jewish female spouse. From this, we infer that the child of a non-Jewish male spouse is Jewish (and can therefore be turned away from Judaism), but the child of a non-Jewish female spouse is not Jewish (and therefore turning away is not an issue). Leviticus 24:10 speaks of the son of an Israelite woman and an Egyptian man as being "among the community of Israel" (i.e., a Jew). On the other hand, in Ezra 10:2-3, the Jews returning to Israel vowed to put aside their non-Jewish wives and the children born to those wives. They could not have put aside those children if those children were Jews. Several people have written to me asking about King David: was he a Jew, given that one of his female ancestors, Ruth, was not a Jew? This conclusion is based on two faulty premises: first of all, Ruth was a Jew, and even if she wasn't, that would not affect David's status as a Jew. Ruth converted to Judaism before marrying Boaz and bearing Obed. See Ruth 1:16, where Ruth states her intention to convert. After Ruth converted, she was a Jew, and all of her children born after the conversion were Jewish as well. But even if Ruth were not Jewish at the time Obed was born, that would not affect King David's status as a Jew, because Ruth is an ancestor of David's father, not of David's mother, and David's Jewish status is determined by his mother. About the Agudath Ha-Rabonim Statement In March, 1997, the Agudath Ha-Rabonim issued a statement declaring that the Conservative and Reform movements are "outside of Torah and outside of Judaism." This statement was widely publicized and widely misunderstood, and requires some response. Three points are particularly worth discussing: 1) the statement does not challenge the Jewish status of Reform and Conservative Jews; 2) the statement is not an official statement of a unified Orthodox opinion; 3) the statement was made with the intent of bringing people into Jewish belief, not with the intention of excluding them from it. First of all, the Agudath Ha-Rabonim statement does not say that Reform and Conservative Jews are not Jews. Their statement does not say anything about Jewish status. As the discussion above explains, status as a Jew has nothing to do with what you believe; it is simply a matter of who your parents are. Reform and Conservative Jews are Jews, as they have always been, and even the Agudath Ha-Rabonim would agree on that point. The debate over who is a Jew is the same as it has always been, the same as was discussed above: the Reform recognition of patrilineal decent, and the validity of conversions performed by non-Orthodox rabbis. Second, the Agudath Ha-Rabonim is not the official voice of mainstream Orthodoxy. Their statement does not represent the unified position of Orthodox Judaism in America. In fact, the Rabbinical Council of America (the rabbinic arm of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America) immediately issued a strong statement disassociating themselves from this "hurtful public pronouncement [which] flies in the face of Jewish peoplehood." Finally, before one can denounce a statement like this, one should make an attempt to understand the position of those making the statement. According to Orthodoxy, the Torah is the heart of Judaism. All of what our people are revolves around the unchanging, eternal, mutually binding covenant between G-d and our people. That is the definition of Jewish belief, according to Orthodoxy, and all Jewish belief is measured against that yardstick. You may dispute the validity of the yardstick, but you can't deny that Conservative and Reform Judaism don't measure up on that yardstick. Reform Judaism does not believe in the binding nature of Torah, and Conservative Judaism believes that the law can change. The Agudath Ha-Rabonim did not intend to cut Reform and Conservative Jews off from their heritage. On the contrary, their intention was to bring Reform and Conservative Jews back to what they consider to be the only true Judaism. The statement encouraged Reform and Conservative Jews to leave their synagogues and "join an Orthodox synagogue, where they will be warmly welcomed." I believe the Agudath Ha-Rabonim were sincere, albeit misguided, in this intention. I have known several Orthodox and Chasidic Jews who believed that if there were no Reform or Conservative synagogues, everyone would be Orthodox. However, my own personal experience with Reform and Conservative Jews indicates that if there were no such movements, most of these people would be lost to Judaism entirely, and that would be a great tragedy. The opinion of mainstream Orthodoxy seems to be that it is better for a Jew to be Reform or Conservative than not to be Jewish at all. While we would certainly prefer that all of our people acknowledged the obligation to observe the unchanging law (just as Conservative Jews would prefer that all of our people acknowledged the right to change the law, and Reform Jews would prefer that all of our people acknowledged the right to pick and choose what to observe), we recognize that, as Rabbi Kook said, "That which unites us is far greater than that which divides us." Famous Jews There once was a site called Jewhoo, that had an extensive list of Jewish actors, athletes, and other celebrities. The site disappeared in 2005. I gather that the site owners got tired of doing a lot of work researching the Jewish background of celebrities only to find their efforts copied all over the Internet without even the slightest acknowledgement. The site exists no more, and the information is lost. Think about that the next time you copy someone else's work and insist that you're doing no harm. (Another one has disappeared since my last update, but it wasn't a great site and I have no idea why it disappeared). In the absence of Jewhoo...JINFO has an outstanding collection of Jews who have won the nobel prize in various areas or have excelled in various academic fields. Jew or Not Jew seems to be trying to fill the gap left by the absense of Jewhoo. It lists Jews in a variety of categories and ranks their Jewishness on three factors: I (Israel, Jewishness by birth history and affiliation), O (Optics, how Jewish they look or act) and K (Kvell, how proud the creators of the site are to consider this person a Jew). It includes a lot of non-Jews who are perceived as Jewish and the text is a bit flighty, but the do seem to do the research and you can probably figure out from whawt they say whether you would consider the person Jewish." --
Secret Jews: The Complex Identity of Crypto-Jews and Crypto-Judaism by Juan Marcos Bejarano Gutierrez, 2016. "This book reviews types of Iberian Conversos (i.e. primarily forced but also voluntary Jewish converts to Christianity) from the late 14th to the 17th centuries and surveys the Christian and Jewish attitudes towards them. The book begins with a brief history of Jewish life in the Iberian Peninsula noting critical events such as the forced conversions of Jews under the Visigoths and the Almohades. The direct events leading to mass conversions of Jews in the late 14th century and the aftermath in the 15th century are reviewed. This study examines texts and decrees that reveal that many Christians doubted the sincerity of these Jewish conversions to Christianity, and how they still regarded and treated Conversos as Jews. Different types of Conversos are then discussed. The challenges and situations each Converso faced were unique and produced different outlooks towards Jewish identity and faith in general. Various Jewish sources, including rabbinic responsa, sermons, and other documents are also analyzed. These sources reveal the positive attitudes of Jews towards Conversos and the Jewish community" -- "This book reviews types of Iberian Conversos (i.e. primarily forced but also voluntary Jewish converts to Christianity) from the late 14th to the 17th centuries and surveys the Christian and Jewish attitudes towards them. Other studies suggest that as a whole, Conversos either fully retained their Jewish identity or sincerely embraced Christianity. This study argues that the Jewish identity of Conversos was complicated and existed along a broad spectrum ranging from complete abandonment to ardent Judaizing. The book concludes by exploring the stories of descendants of Conversos in the United States, Latin America, and in Spain and Portugal, who are searching and often embracing a Jewish identity once thought lost. Discover the complex and fascinating history of Secret Jews." --

2019.04.03 21:52 jvreeland 2019 Redditors on the Trail Week #5 Update

Lots of hikers in TN and NC with some cold temps in the Smokies.
If you’re going to be thruhiking this year, or hiking a biggish section, there’s a simple Signup Form that will get you on t0.he list. Once a week or so, u/rusty075 and jvreeland will post a little summary of the new online postings from the hikers on the list. Then we can all live vicariously through them while they’re out there hiking and we’re stuck inside.
A note about signing up for the list: Do realize that the idea is for us to be able to follow along with your journey as you hike the trail, so it really doesn’t do any good to sign up if you don’t have a public online social media. Similarly, signing up and saying you’re “on Instagram” doesn’t really help us unless you also give us your user name. We’re smart, but we’re not that smart.
Hikers currently on list: 110
Here’s what’s new from 3/20/19 to DATE: 4/3/19

2019.03.22 21:30 geekfuel [WTS] Over 360oz - Dumping Everything for a House Down Payment - Gold, Generics, ASE, Superman, Old Pours, US Junk, Foreign Junk, Others

My wife and I are getting ready to purchase our 1st home so it's time to dump everything to fund the down payment. Everything needs to go so I'm willing to negotiate a little on bulk buys. However, I feel I've priced everything fairly, so I'm going to be firm on some items like spot or generics.
I'll be out and about on and off all day today and all weekend so don't fret if I don't get back to you right away. I'll answer all messages in the order I receive them.

Some other items I found after the 1st photo

Insurance or signature service upon request at actual cost.
I package very securely and use lots of tape. However, once the USPS has possession its out of my hands. I'm not responsible for a USPS mishap if you opted to not get insurance. Best I can do is submit a missing mail search request. This usually gets items found that seem to end up in tracking limbo.

2019.02.28 06:35 SuperGuideGear 2019 North America Whitewater Festival List

After not being able to find any lists longer than 5 festivals long, I spent way too many hours making this. It was trying to figure out which Fests we were going to hit up this season. Figured I would share, I'll be posting the final list at my site as well, so it will be accessible and updated.
Feel free to let me know of all the ones I missed. As I think of it now, I missed Video Boater Challenge in Fayetteville. Also if it says 2018 in the Dates Column it's because there was no updated dates for this year.
